  1. jsm, Just noticed you're in England. The breaker is Douglasvalley.co.uk. Very helpfull. They sent me pictures of the three clusters they had showing part numbers and recommended which one I needed. Alan
  2. Hi jsm, got your email. I also had the oil sensor (assume it's the same as the sender) replaced but didn't fix. Porsche wanted about $1500 for new cluster plus labour. I called a breaker in the Porche GT magazine and they had one which matched my part number and was within a thousand miles of my cluster. Paid 120 pounds about $150. Here's a link to a hack site with clear instructions for cluster removal http://boxsters.addr.com/hacks/index.htm I'm not exaggerating when I say it's a one hour job maybe less. You need a torx screwdriver set. Remove two screws lift up pod with cluster. You can unplug the three conectors and move it to the side and try your replacement unit. I disconnected the battery but I've read some people leave battery connected. Replacing the cluster fixed my problem. Some differences to yours, my one was solid failure. The whole display just flashed for so many seconds and then went to the time display. Other thing is, your dislplay looks to be from a newer model. My car is a 2002 S. With the replacement cluster in place I get a five second count down and then the oil level is shown between the upper and lower marks. Maybe yours is a more advanced computer display? Your working display seems to suggest you have too much oil, it's above the max. Is that normal? Anyway, if you can borrow a cluster or willing to buy one to try it's really a straight forward job. Like you I lived with it, but it was great to get it solved. Alan
  3. Hi I've just replaced the lower front flaps on my 2002 Boxster S. They tend to get damaged hitting bumps and kerbs. My nearside one was completely gone. Left and right relacements from Porsche were about 23 pounds for the pair. p/n P996.504.503.00 and P996.504.504.00 . A ten minute job to remove and replace. Three philips screws holding each. I've seen some posts that describe them as mud guards, but according to 'The Ultimate Owners' Guide' by Mark Bennett they extract hot air away from the radiators and can have an effect on handling. Only on 986 models. On the 987 they are integrated with wheel arch liner. Not an expensive fix.
  4. Just to close this post down. Replacing cluster assembly solved problem. Alan
  5. So far so good. Replacement cluster connected and now showing oil level and countdown cycle. Will put it all back together and take it for a spin.
  6. Thanks Loren. I should get part in a couple of days. My plan is to remove suspect cluster and plug in replacement part and then turn key in ignition to see if oil level check cycle runs. If this is successful I'll refit original part and take car to Dashfixer depot to get settings put right. I've got a recent diagnostic printout will this have all the information I need to set up replacement cluster? This might be stupid question, but do I need to disconnect the battery before removing cluster connectors or can I do it on the fly? many thanks Alan
  7. I have an oil level sensor fault. The display just flashes on startup. Book says its the sensor but I've already replaced this. Next possible cause is cluster. My car is 2002 Boxster S manual six speed. Part number on my cluster is 986 641 217 01 EOD. A Porsche breaker has two units, p/n 986 641 217 02 FHB from a 2003 3.2S 6 speed manual and 986 641 217 00 EOD from a 2000 3.2S six speed manual. Can anyone please advise if these units would be ok. many thanks Alan
  8. Hi, My '02 Boxster S is showing a flashing oil level display on startup. After a few seconds it stops and displays mileage. No counter and no level shown. The manual says if whole display flashing then the oil level senser is faulty. I had the sensor replaced at recent service but no change. Local Porsche dealership have car with same problem after replacing sensor. Their next plan is to replace the cluster. I'm trying to confirm with them that replacing the cluster solved the problem but they haven't come back to me. Replacement cluster is around $1200 but you can pick one up for a fraction of that cost on Ebay. I've read up on cluster removal and I don't think it's a major task, but wanted to ask if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions? Someone suggested bad gas cap. I can hear a pressure release hiss when I unscrew the cap, so I think it's doing it's job ok. Anyway thanks for any input.
