  1. Good morning! Any of you has a short throw shifter installed in your 996? My winter car is an FJ Cruiser and had that installed when I bought the truck and I like it, so I was wondering about the experience in the 996. Thanks! Gyorgy
  2. UPDATE: I left the car at work yesterday and had my wife pick me up. Today I called the mechanic who recommended having the car towed but I was not thrilled about the idea of entrusting a tow truck driver with my car so after a friend suggested I could drive the car like that I called the mechanic back who gave his blessings -but also mentioned that there is a slim chance I may end up stranded, oh well.... So when I went back to the garage, the car started up the the "issue" was gone. I did go to the mechanic and he took a look and concluded that everything looked fine. So I will try to stick around close to home if this happens again. Moral of the story? Probably none, but I did save $150 of towing costs : ) Thanks for the help!!
  3. Thanks Loren and JFP. I did check the belt, it seems fine. So, I hope maybe the pulley... Although it may not change the bottom line: replace the alternator. Any word of advice on towing? Thanks for your thoughts!
  4. Good day everyone! I commute 30 miles to work each way. Just before I got there today, the battery/generator warning light came on as I stopped at a red light. I also heard some mechanical noise from the engine. I ended up driving the remaining few blocks to work and parking it in the garage. Now, I think I may need the generator replaced as my battery should be in good shape. Interestingly, I just had the 60k service... Which reminds me that years ago after I had a head gasket job on my 1995 Mercedes E320, a week later had the drive belt brake on the air pump (?) costing a bunch. I will be calling the indie who did the service and get it towed to his shop. Any word of advice on getting the car on the tow truck properly (flat bed)? As I am writing this it just occured to me: this is NOT concerning for the IMS failure, am I correct? Thanks for letting me share : ) Gyorgy
  5. Thanks logray, I read up on the Variocam plus system and it totally makes sense what is explained and what I feel! I appreciate your knowledgeable input. Gyorgy
  6. Thanks, I thought it may be something mechanical. So is that normal for these engines? I appreciate your reassurance -at least I hope it was reassurance : )
  7. Hi all, I have a question: I sense a VERY SUBTLE "bump" in the power band usually in 3rd gear around 3000 RPM. It is hard to describe: as I accelerate slowly depressing the pedal, at those RPMs for that split second there is a step up ie as I vusalize it, the power band is not completely smooth. Does it make sense? Is that normal for the engine, maybe some valve opening? Otherwise love the car. Thanks! Gyorgy
  8. Hi Joe, just a question: why did you decide to replace the foam in the seat? I am amused by the "buttprint" I leave when I get out of the car and it seems to not completely go away. I bought the car used, about 8 months ago. I would be considering doing the same swap, without breaking the switch, of course... Thanks for your input. Gyorgy BTW I almost ate it to work yesterday on some black ice while finishing passing avehicle. I was impressed how well the Pirellis (Wintersport 240) regained traction at 75-80 mph.
  9. Hope this makes you fell better, I have a similar issue. Athough I have not been aware of it lately, maybe because I have the radio/music on. Mine sounds metallic, like a subdued loose change rattle in a tight space. I heard it when accelerating hard. Hope some other will chime in as to what could be done. Mine seems to come from the passanger side, BTW. On a different note, I had the spoiler lubed due to some squeeking which I could only hear when I raised it when the car was stopped to see what it looks like. Anyway, it was done at Morong in Falmouth, ME and with a $50 off coupon they had sent me to b used for non-routine service, I ended up paying $6.91. I bet noone can top that! Also, I have new winter tires on (Pirelli 240 Snowsports) and so far happy with the way they ride. Not noticebly noisier than the summer Contisports.
  10. ogun228, do you put the ra on and take it off dependent on the expected weather, or you leave it on for the entire season? I heard it may scratch the paint, what do you think? Gy
  11. Getting a set of wheels and about to order the Pirelli 240 Winter Sports. Anyone with positive experience? How about negatives? Also, I was wondering about putting the 3M clear bra on? Worthwhile? Thanks for your valuable input. Gyorgy 2003 Porsche Targa 56k
  12. Thanks for your feedback. I am fairly tall (6'2) and still I really had to stretch my neck to see the top of the spoiler, but it seems to work... Cool! Regarding the squeeking, the mechanic tried to lube it but said that he needs to take the mechanism apart to get to the interior. He guessed about 1 1/2 hr of labor. Worth it? What winter tires do you recomend? Much appreciating your advice.
  13. I do not mean to steal this topic, but how do I know the rear spoiler is working at all? I am not aware when it goes up or goes down for that matter. I have used the manual button and when it goes up I hear some squeaking. I asked the mechanic at the dealership and he said it will be about 1 1/2hr labor to lube it. He tried to lube it from the "outside" without the noise going away. Thanks!
  14. Here is my dilemma: it seems such a waste to park the car for 6 months in New England. I know there are people out there driving their rear wheel drive Carreras in the winter. I assume with a set of winter tires... I would not drive when there is significant snow on the road. The Porsche mechanic warned me about the stuff they use on the road (some liquid?) that is VERY caustic. What do you think? Any personal experience? Thanks in advance!
  15. Thanks for all your replies. Just yesterday AM, while going to work (Sunday at 6:20 AM), I was pulled over, silly speed limit on a country road. The policeman was traveling in the opposite direction, hard to spot in time... Got off after he asked me about where I was going, what I do etc. It's much easier to keep the speed limit in my Toyota FJ. So, I think, I will get a detector but will use common sense the best I can. I am hooked on the 911. Funny thing is, the 996 design really grew on me. Some say, the 997 interior is a great step up but I think the 996's design is very ergonomic, I especially love having the window controls in the middle. Rubber side down!
