  1. Very good info, So obviously CNA does not have a max amount they will pay out like I experienced with Route66. I think I will look into CNA.

BTW- did your shop find what was causing the metal filings?

    -Don

No Don. Never figured out the source since I am not fling to split the case. Will take my chances given I have CNA coverage and there appears to be a small failure rate on the M97 style IMS. Will drain the oil in 1000 mi to take another look.

  2. I have a CNA extended warranty on my 2006 Boxster S I purchased through CarMax when I purchased the car from them last year. I got this because of my concern over the IMS failures. My car had 38k on it at the time and I paid around $1600 for a 5 year 100K warranty with a $300 deductable-not too bad I think. Pretty much bumper to bumper coverage. I figured if that is who CarMax partners with they must be pretty good. I also turned up pretty good customer and independent ratings in my research.

Exactly one year later I take my car into my Indy Porsche shop and get two calls. The first saying they suspect a cracked coolant reservoir that will cost $1000. The second call saying they they found a good number of metal shavings in the oil filter and they were suspecting a failing IMS! The shop contacted CNA and they said they would pay for the repairs 100%. Now after pulling the transmission and further investigation I was responsible to pay for if the diagnosis was wrong, it turned out it passed a leak test and the IMS was not failing. So, I can't tell you they would have been good to their word but I suspect they would have been.

So far I am glad I bought the warranty. It has given me peace of mind and my experience has indicated they were willing to step up to covering some major repair costs. I would purchase from CNA again.

  3. What is fair compensation when a doctor makes a misdiagnosis? Usually a lawsuit correct? These people are supposed to be Porsche experts correct? Any SKILLED shop should be able to diagnose a failed IMS. They just checked now with Porsche now to see what bearing set up you had? That would be the first thing they should have done..

I wouldn't give them a dime.. If they give you a hard time take them to small claims You can file online in 15 minutes.

Glad to hear you have a healthy engine... :king:

Thanks for the feedback Phillipj. To be fair, I read these threads a lot and consider myself fairly well informed so I always knew there was a chance they were wrong about not having the M97 'non upgradeable' bearing, but I feel they should bare the lions share. Their actual out of pocket costs are what they pay a mechanic for a day's work ($25-30/hr?) involved with this and not the billable shop rate ($140). That is the basis I plan to use. I will get back with the results of my discussions.

  4. Great news for me and all those other concerned 2006 Boxster owners, This was misdiagnosed as an IMS failure. When this started last week, the Indy Porsche shop checked with Porsche and claims they were told the s/n and build date (11/05) indicated it was the old single row M96 bearing. This added fuel to misdiagnosing a failing IMS bearing. Porsche actually sent them that type of IMS cover. However, when they dropped the trany, they found it was the new enhanced M97 double row version (unfortunatey cannot do the LN upgrade without cracking the case ). So the good news is it is not failing!

The bad news is I am going to have some diagostic charges. Any ideas on what is fair considering they misdiagnosed this?

Also, they have no explaination for the 1 mm ferous metal shavings they found in the filter. Any ideas? should I be concerned?

  5. Just got a call my my Indy Porsche mechanic who was doing my oil change on a 2006 BS with 45K miles. He found large metal shavings in the filter and he has diagnosed it as a failing IMS bearing. My build date was 11/05 so until we pull the transmission won't be able to tell which one it is. Fortunaely, I am covered by a CNA Extended Warranty with a $300 deductable so I should be covered for the most part. The preliminary response is they will cover it but need to do more diagnostics after they drop the tranny before I know for sure.

I will most likely have to pay for the price differece between the LN ceramic bearing and the cost of the OEM bearing. Does anyone know the approximate difference in cost? Anyway, I am very lucky to have caught this before it blew up. I did not have any clue. There were no unusual sounds and no oil leaks.

I am the second owner and was very concerned about the IMS issue even though all the maintenance was done correctly and the car appeared to be well cared for. That is why I purchased the extended warranty even after reading that many of them arent worth much because the don't pay. I will keep my fingers crossed but it looks good by their initial statements.

Should I do any other preventive work while they are in there? I have Tiptronic transmission so no clutch work needed.

  6. I had the same problem on my 2006 Boxster S. Used a black permanent marker to fill in the white parts. Then touched it up with the lights on in the dark to go over imperfections. Even managed to retain the white shapes of the button icons. Not a perfect color match since the marker is slightly more shiney but still looks 100% better. You would'nt notice if you didn't do the repair yourself.

  7. I have a Boxster 987-1 with a frequent and annoying 'creak' when the car goes over bumps or flexes. I have searched this forum and found a TSB of how to deal with the noise but it does not tell you how to remove the A Pillar trim. The top portion is easy with removal of the visor but it is also secured somewhere below. Are there instructions for doing this anywhere or can someone provide instructions?

  8. Hi Maurice,

I would like to get the plastic parts but was not able to find it on ebay anymore or from any previous threads.

    Thanks for your assistance!

    Michael

Happy to be able to oblige!

    P.M. SENT!

Let me know if you need any assistance before or after the parts arrive ...these tops are terrific, but can be a royal PITA if one is not attuned to its weak points///\\\

    Regards,, Maurice.

Sorry Maurice but I was not able to find a PM from you-not is SPAM folder. Could you resend please?

    Thanks again,

  9. I noticed a pattern with mine. If I start the car and move it a few feet, then wash it and start it again to move it back in the garage, it will very reliably smoke pretty bad the next time I start it. Otherwise it doesn't seem to smoke and doesn't use oil between changes.

Dale_K, I had the exact thing as you describe in your pattern happen to me today in my 2006 987S. First time I have ever noticed any smoke on start up. I also was washing my car and it was after I was finished and was moving it back into the garage that I had a large puff of blue smoke when I started it. Lasted about 2 seconds then went away. Whats with that? Does it have something to do with washing the car?

  10. I am a new member to this site and recently purchased a 2006 987S. My wind deflector rattles when driving with the top down. When traveling at highway speeds it seems to flex and buffet quite a bit to the point I am concerned it will pop out of the mounting and exit the car to the rear.

Has anyone had this problem and sucessfully solved the rattling issue? Is it normal to flex so much or does this indicate a problem with the mounting mechanism? I can't see anything that looks out of place. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for the suggestion M2! I'll give it a try and report back wiht the results.

  11. Hello:

Just bought 3 weeks ago my first Porsche, a Boxster 1998. Every thing was working well with the car, but one day, after opening the convertible top and closing it, a plastic ball joint broke, top dash light went on. Went to the dealer, did buy the balljoint with the shaft, replaced it, top works fine but the dash light stills on and the windows will not go full up when the top is down. Went to the dealer to have some maintenance work done, told'em about the top dash light, belive it or not they found nothing wrong and the light was off when I picked up the car! but just open the top, light on, and stills on! Last monday my brake lever micro switch went off, so today bought the parts and decide to change the two micro switchs, the one at the brake lever, and the one at the latch, light is on again, and stills ON.

I think is probably an adjustment, because, at the end of the closing cycle, I have to really pull the top to its place to latch it, and I have the feeling that the latch isn't going all in, even if everything seems OK. But as I open it, everything goes well and the latch does not touches the plexiglass of the windshield.

    Any ideas!

Thans in advance for any help!

    Guy,

I have a 2006 987S with a different top relay set up but have had a similar problem. The dealer could not dupolicate it even after adjusting tenson cables and fold placements straps. Ultimately I found I had to continue holding down the close switch a second or two beyond what looked like the end of the cycle. When I do this I don't have the problem. If I let up right when the clamshell is closed and there is no more movement, I get the top light and open window problem. Might be worth a try.

  13. Actually, Porsche transitioned to the larger diameter IMS bearing in late 2005, all 2006 (and on) cars or replacement engines have the larger bearing as well.

Even though it is an '06 model, my build date was 11/2005 which would seem to be on the cusp of the change to the new bearing. Are you saying anything designated as MY 2006 would have the larger bearing? If so, would this be the one that cannot be changed out by removing the transmission and would in fact have to be taken apart to upgrade? Thanks for the clarification.

  14. At the risk of beating this topic to glue, I have read in past postings that there was a final factory-modified IMS bearing that began to be used in 987-2 cars and that the switch ocurred sometime in the 2006 MY. I have also read that the most accurate way of determining which upgrade is required is to do it by engine serial number. My engine serial number is 2662603449.

Can someone assist me in determining which bearing I have currently and if I should consider upgrading it based on which type it is? I know this is a personal judgement but some bearing designs seem to fail more than others. Thanks for the assitance!
