  1. Greetings... I have a 2003 Boxster. The weather seal that surrounds the headlamp unit is shot. Does anyone have an aftermarket source for such a part? The good people at Sunset Porsche advised that Porsche does not make replacements. As a FYI... this part surrounds the headlamp unit is held in place by two screws on one side and what appears to be three plastic fasteners on the other....stretched out, it is about 24 inches in length. any help or repair advice is very much appreciated. thanks
  2. My car is a 2003 Boxster and I am the original owner. I love everything about the car except for the poorly designed electronics in the key fob. I have tried just about everything over the past ten years (elongated antenna, reverse polarity, dealer intervention, new fobs, many new batteries, voodoo chants and on and on). The plain simple truth is that the key fob activated locking/unlocking system just does not work or, for the few times that it does work, it operates inconsistently. As a by the way, the system on my wife's 2005 Honda is tremendously superior...it will lock/unlock from a distance of over 20 yards, will always operate with a single press of a button and has never required new batteries. So.... my key fobs have failed my for the last time and I have decided that they won. I will now exclusively open and lock the car using (OMG...wait for it) the key. It is amazingly simple technology, you just insert the key in the door and twist. But, I did have to make a few small changes to the car...I unplugged the car theft horn and removed the plastic clip/ferrule from the gas door. Gee, I feel better now
  3. I can't seem to get my radio to work. My car is a 2003 Boxster and the radio is original / stock. My radio has worked perfectly for over 8 years. The problem started when I recently replaced a dead battery. At that time I also cleaned the "battery area" of pine needles and dead leaves; I used compressed air to blow the junk out. The radio will occasionally turn on, and then unexpectedly turn off. If I unplug the associated fuse and re-plug, the radio might work for awhile and, then again, it might not. I have tried everything that I can think of to fix this problem, including...... - checked the amps; with fuse removed, mA are about 50, with fuse plugged in, mA increase to about 80... I don't thing this is unusual - I replaced the starter switch...no difference - all fuses are OK - I checked all wires that are visible for any type of problem.. I can't see anything - I pulled the radio and removed the faceplate to check connections...no difference - all other electrical items on this car work perfectly and I do not have any aftermarket alarms or dodads installed. I am at my wits end with this one and can't think of anything else to check. That being said, is there anything I might have missed? For 2003 models, is there some type of radio re-set procedure using the Porsche diagnostic computer? Lastly, if I must buy a new radio, are there any recommendations? I would want the "new radio" to be an exact match to the current black matte finish. many thanks in advance
  4. OK, I had some spare time and decided to dig around in the rear trunk. The solution is stupidly simple. The cable actuator is mounted in the trunk area by wrapping it in a sticky foam blanket which is then shoved it position. The device is held in position by friction and not a mechanical fastener (which would restrict the actuator's tendency to be pulled toward the cable attachment point). I was able to reach in and pull the actuator to the left and slightly adjust the sticky foam blanket....the cable slack is now gone and problem solved. I must say that this is a really cheesy design by Porsche engineers.....apparently whoever came up with this solution was at the local hofbrau haus when Newton's 3rd law of motion was reviewed in Physics 101.
  5. I have a 2003 Boxster First of all, I "searched" the forum for answers, but could not find any solutions. My rear trunk has always been tempermental and recently refuses to open. Pressing the remote key (or the interior switch) will cause the actuator to pull the cable (I can hear it whirring away) but the trunk lid refuses to open. I can open the trunk using the manual emergency release and I have oiled / cleaned all of the mechanical linkages and springs, but still no improvement. I took a careful look at the cable linkage and the cable appears to have about 1/4" to 1/2" of slack. It is possible that the actuator just can't pull the cable far enough to release the trunk ? Is this a normal condition ? Can the cable be adjusted to remove the slack ? If so, any procedures out there ??? Many, many thanks in advance
  6. During install of a four stalk kit to enable OBC, I broke the grey connector. This unfortunate event then began a frustrating on-again, off-again two year search for the correct replacement. The good, and persistent, people at Sunset Porsche came to the rescue and were able to track down the correct part. Please give Chris a call at Sunset. The part is actually sold as a three plug set and the part number is PNA72104300202 (32 PIN Socket Housing). This means that you will get a blue, green and grey plug. On a side note, there are subtle molded differences with each colored plug, so you can only slip a green plug into a green socket. Chris had to special order the set from Germany, but the cost was not huge....less than $25 with shipping. cheers
  7. Does (or did) Porsche make an ash tray surround without pre-cast holes for electrical switches? If so, what would be the part number? The stock part (with four holes) is embossed with the number 996.552.095.02 My car is a 2003 Boxster thanks in advance !
  8. The locking tab on the plug housings are easy to break. I broke one when I installed the 4 stalk OBC. My "temporary" fix was to place a small electrical cable tie around the wire bundle with the cable tie locking thing positioned to hold the cam in place. Have not had any problems for over two years. However, I would be delighted if someone could source a supplier for this part. My car is a 2003 and I have checked with different dealers and wrecking yards with no luck. Everyone wants to sell the entire wiring harness ! My closest brush with success was with Sunset. I ordered a plug housing and plug assembly, but it proved to be an incorrect size/model as it would not fit into the cluster. Anyone out there got a source ???
  9. I am curious if anyone has done this "hack" My car is a 2003 Boxster I would like to reverse the sequence for engaging the fog lamps. Specifically, have the rear lamp light first and then the front lamps. I would think that you will need to alter the connections in the headlamp switch, but I really do not want do this by trial and error. Why do this? Well, the rear lamp is an effective way to get morons that insist upon using their front fogs on a fogless day to back off (or even turn off those superbright lights), but I really do not want to offend those in ahead of me with my lit front fogs. Any advice is appreciated
  10. A question for Tool Pants.... Do you have a current part number for the programable VW relay. ??? I checked with a local dealer about a year ago with a part number provided from a previous forum post on the same topic .... the parts desk person said the item was unavailable. thanks in advance
  11. Chris, Many, many thanks.... chatted with Jeff at Sunset and the part is on its way to me !
  12. Hi Chris.... Well, actually no. I tried to order the part from a local dealer, but "Porsche's parts system" refused to place the request (BTW, I did take another peek at the item with magnifying glass... part # 999.650.509.40 -"plug casing", right?). I then appealed to PCNA to see if they could help me order the item .... complete waste of time as they just kicked me back to the dealer! I am very, very interested in your source for this small item..... could you pass your contact's name my way? thanks !
  13. You are absolutely correct. The problem was the "special tool" provided with the car. A simple twist of a quality 5 mm socket solved the problem in less than two seconds. Many thanks ... and, yes, I did enjoy a beer afterwards !
  14. Thanks and, yes, I am using the special socket from the tool kit.... and I am fairly certain that I am following the correct procedure described in the owners manual. The unit is seated correctly, can be pushed into place and rotation of the tool towards the rear of the car will produce a pop that indicates that it is locked.... but, it isn't !! Very frustrating.... but I'll give it another chance this evening. Pleasant drive??? .... well, maybe. It happens to be 60 miles of rush hour morning and afternoon traffic through the angry freeways of Los Angeles ! Maybe a beer afterwards will help cheers
  15. The left hand headlamp assembly just will not lock in place..... The right hand unit slides in perfectly and easily locks with audible pop. The left hand unit fits correctly and a partial turn of the locking tool will produce a popping sound. The assembly appears to locked in place but just a slight finger tip lift of the leading edge of the turn signal will cause the unit to slide out ! I have repeatedly checked the headlamp assembly, mounting plate, assorted alingment channels etc. All appears normal and nothing is broken..... Any suggestions as to something I might be missing? Is there a way to adjust or "tighten up" the locking mechanism?? Car is a 2003 Boxster with Litronics. This problem probably will covered by warranty, but it is a 60 mile roundtrip drive to the dealer. thanks in advance
  16. I did the four-stalk OBC install over the weekend; it was flawless except for one small problem. When I re-attached the grey connector to the cluster the plastic lock tab broke off. I could not see a part number on the connector... it is a simple sleeve type of device with a rotating black cam. Here's a picture... I would need the grey connector on the left.....
  17. Wow, that was quick... all good ideas, thanks !
  18. Did a couple of searches... but didn't come up with anything Looking for part number and price for a non-smoker type of plug that would replace the cigarette lighter (the heated element); local dealer could not find it on their system... car is a 2003 Boxster many thanks in advance
  19. Took my 2003 Boxster to the dealer the other day for a few minor warranty items. Most were taken care of, one was not. I have the standard black disk brake calipers. On one of the calipers the Porsche logo is wearing away. The dealer declined to replace this logo and claimed that the logo is actually kind of special. Specifically, that the logo is designed for high temperature resistance and that "repair" might actually involve replacement of the caliper. Is the dealer's claim accurate, or just so much nonsense? To my eye the logo appeared to be just a decal that could be easily scrapped off and replaced. If it is just a decal, what is the part number for the item? thanks in advance !
  20. Thanks ! Looks like I'll add this to my short list of warranty items !
  21. This is probably a silly item, but I am curious. I had reason to remove the rear license plate the other day. Behind the plate is a inch and a half diameter hole..... which, of course, is the where a ring-eye type bolt would be screwed in if the car needs to pulled up on a flat bed. This hole was not covered. However, the owners manual mentions that a plug needs to be gently removed before attaching the towing ring. I bought my '03 Boxster new. Did US models come equipped with such a plug?
  22. While finishing one of my lighting projects, I noticed an unconnected electrical connector in the lower center console. It is a four wire flat black plastic connector thing, looking much like a connect used to link trailer wiring to a vehicle. I'm sure this question has been asked and answered in some other forum, but what is it for? And, to which fuse is it linked? Many thanks ... p.s. my Boxster is an '03
