  1. Anyone have experience with swapping climate controls on a 987 (I imagine a 997 would be similar)?

    On my 996's, the climate control 'box' was a swap-in unit.

    Is this also true of the 987S? I accidentally didn't include auto climate control on my 987S order (d'oh!). If I can order the auto climate head unit and it's just a swap out in the center console tower, then I might explore it. But if it's more involved, well I'll learn to live with the slight inconvenience (and remember to quadruple check orders before I sign off!).

  2. Just did a B&M Short Shifter install on a 2007 987S.

    Just a few heads up:

    There have been some changes, apparently, to the 2007 987S. I had installed a B&M in my 2005 987S (now sold) without issue.

    The changes:

    The leather boot is now held down by screws, you cannot just pop it off. Instead, you must take the two sides off the console (which themselves are held in by two screws in the back), separate the two parts of the leather boot surround (the lower alumilook piece is what is screwed in, the upper interior-colored piece is not), remove the screws, and then go forward.

    Also, the shift tower bushings are a little narrower. I had to widen them to fit in the B&M blue aluminum bushings. Also, I recommend that the bushing with the set screw go in towards the back of the car, otherwise reassembling the console is prohibitively difficult.

    Apparently B&M has now released an updated shifter for 2007 and beyond models with narrower bushings.

    That's about it, but it was quite a shock after having done three B&M retrofits (two on 996's and one on my 2005 987S) to hit these snags!

  3. Part of my reply to you got omitted from my reply to your note. I was curious as to what the failure mechanism was as a result of the engine tear-down?? Did you lose all the oil ( almost all) through a catastrophic RMS failure??

    No oil appears to have been lost, so I think we can rule out RMS failure.

    From all symptoms (e.g., the "bowling ball in the clothes dryer" sounds when it was dying), I surmise that it was intermediate shaft failure. They are not confirming that -- in part, because I suspect PCNA would not like to confirm the specific cause of engine failure. Since I work sometimes as an expert witness in lawsuits, this makes sense to me!

  4. Sigh....

    My beloved 2002 Targa had a catastrophic engine failure two nights ago. I was driving along and it sounded like someone had put a bowling ball in a clothes dryer.

    Porsche service at my local joint confirmed my worst fears: my engine is gone.

    They say that even though it is out of warranty, PCNA may cover half (the car has all of 18,500 miles on it). Half is still a lot of green.

    So I plunged through the past service history from the prior owner and found that in 2004, with about 12,500 on the clock, the car had its RMS and intermediate shaft seals replaced due to an oil leak. (The service was done, luckily, not at the same dealership where she sits today, lonely and powerless.)

    Do you think that a botched job on that could have lead to engine failure 6,000 miles later? If so, I will use it to argue they should give me a whole new engine.

    Complete newbie here. I am shopping for a 2002 Targa and am wondering what sort of things I should be aware of about this car.

    What sort of questions should I ask of the owner?

    The car I am considering has ~29K miles and no RMS failure.

    Not much, really. The only thing to look out for is the permanent grin on your face for the first two weeks of ownership!

    The roof may rattle a little when fully closed. Note that there is a TSB to fix the roof rattle, if yours has that: 3/05 6006

    It's a couple of seals that need to be replaced. You can order the parts and it's a DIY.

  6. I have a 987S that I am going to either trade to a dealer or sell to someone.

    It has PCM Navigation that I had installed last year. Cost me a bundle (~$4k!). I kept the original radio.

    As you may know, having navigation or not changes the car's resale value by about $0.02 :)

    Do you think I would get much for having the PCM taken out and then selling it on ebay?

    The dealer claims it will cost $500-$1k to take it out, so I need to make a reasonable amount above that to justify the expense. Because it's a MOST bus thing, I can't have my favorite independent shop do the uninstall. They can't reprogram the 987S' computer.

    Any opinions out there? I'm really stuck on this one.

  7. Well I've bought and sold on the internet for about 10 years (no lie, and yes those were horse and buggy days!).

    My reputation as a seller is worth far more to me than shipping. I have a stellar reputation that is far more precious than a few bucks here or there.

    My advice to Bobby comes from this experience: reimburse John's shipping. If the tables were turned, you'd like the same courtesy.

  8. Depends on what you want.

    I own both a 2005 Boxster S (987S) and a 996.

    The two cars are completely different beasts. Both cars has its advantages. The Boxster S is planted around turns like almost no other car I've ever driven. Road and Track confirms this in their data on the car: 1.0g skid pad, up there with f-cars. The Carrera is balanced so that you can steer with the accelerator around turns, and the pluses (and minuses) of that are well documented.

    When you press pedal to the metal however, the Carrera wins. It feels like it stands back on its hind legs, rears up, and launches, whereas the Boxster S doesn't give anywhere near that kind of feel. At the same time, the Carrera often feels closer to the limit-- like you can do some serious mischief in the car-- whereas the Boxster S feels fast but almost boring because it is so safe.

    I like them both. The Boxster is an excellent roadster. I drove a Z4, S2000, SLK, etc., before deciding on it. It was an easy decision. The Boxster is the best out there in that class.

    The Carrera is an excellent coupe. It is a hoot to drive, but you have to know what you're doing or this car can get you in some serious trouble fast.

    I guess my bottom line is it's apples and oranges, and I like the taste of both of them.

  9. Going back to tmc's problem, have you checked that the brake lights work (as suggested by Tool Pants)?

    The brake light is fine.

    Also, the cruise will not engage if the clutch cruise switch is operated. If it is secured the same way as the brake switch, then it can slip in the mounting bracket and cause the switch not to operate.
    Ok, that might be it... what am I looking for?

    Another thought - and this is a long shot - are we sure your car is not eGas? I suppose if it was a very late build in 1999 it might be DME7.2 and we are all barking up the wrong tree. Check your option sticker for (M)620 - if it has then you have egas, and there is no mechanical actuator.

    Not egas / no option 620.

  10. I'm getting a new gadge surround from Bumperplugs and need to remove the cluster to install it. I found boxster instructions here but I'm pretty sure the cluster is different on a 996.

    After trying to debug my cruise control problem, I've become an expert at removing the console <_<

    Actually it's amazingly similar, except you do not need to pull out the hazard switch. Pull off the hazard switch cover and the Torx screw is already visible w/o removing the switch. The other side is the 'fake' microphone and it is just as on the 986 boxster (pry it off and remove the Torx screw inside).

  11. Sorry, been on holiday and just got back.

    I know it sounds obvious, but have you checked fuse B7? That's the power supply for the cruise. Also, chech that the 4-way connector is in the right way round - it is polarised, but not very well.

    B7 is good.

    By 4-way connector, you mean the one that attaches to the stalk? It's the right way.

    What does the other end connect to? Loren's diagram showed it connecting to the "CONTROL UNIT CRUISE CONTROL". Where is that located in the car? Maybe I accidentally disconnected that.
