  1. I accidently filled up with regular unleaded (87 octane) rather than the recommeded super unleaded (91 octane). I know the computer will adjust the timing so that the engine will run on lower octane (albeit with less HP), but will the prolonged period of running a full tank of 87 hurt the engine in any way?

The 996 owner's manual says that the car will operate normally on at least 95 RON (I think 87 octane is about 91 RON?), so that doesn't sound good. Should I siphon out the gas?

No. It will not hurt the car.

  2. Okay, 2008 997S purchased new about 4 months ago.

Overactive Rear Spoiler: I have noticed this when I get into the car with the spoiler down and drive to say the other side of the mall (never exceeding about 30mph).

When I turn the car off and get out the rear spoiler is up. Doesn't happen all the time, but often enough.

PCM Going Verruckt: For the last few weeks I noticed the station and song title displaying in the gauge cluster was not changing. It read Madonna and some other crap. Well, this morning I get in and all I get is 4 dashes. The actual PCM display is fine, just nothing in the gauge cluster.

PCM has the latest firmware and there are no diagnostics codes read.

    Any ideas?

  3. I have a 1983 944 with the space saver spare tire. The tire will no longer hold air, and I was looking for a repair or replacement. However, when I took it to a couple of the larger tire chains (Shore, NTW) they said that it requires special eqipment to dismount and repair the tire.

Has anyone else run into this, and am I stuck buying a complete new tire/wheel assembly?

    Thanks!

    LS

    Try 944online.com for a good used wheel/tire...

  4. Could be related to that O2 sensor :)

ok im new to this one and i have a question that i hope someone can help me with. i have an 88 944 turbo with 92,000 miles. the car came with autothority stage 2 chips and the small oriface that went in the banjo bolt... very quick, but decided to install a lindsey racing boost enhancer in which i was told to remove the oriface in the banjo bolt so i didnt have to worry about over boosting. so i left the chips in the car and installed the boost enhancer on stock settings. ALOT faster, but i notice that when i jump on it hard through a few gears for the first few seconds there is smoke coming out the exhaust...

is this due to the fact the power curve has been changed?

any ideas and is this possibly normal when these cars take off like a scalded dog

    Thank you very much

    Jeff

  5. likely O2 sensor.

have an 88 944 turbo with approx. 92,000 miles.

its failing emissions not for a bad cat (Nox) but for CO and the HC's

limit for Virginia is 110 for HC's.... i got 205

    limit for CO% is .44 i got 3.19

I changed the oil, air filter and put some new bosch platinum plugs in it last weekend shortly after it failed the first time with similar numbers. does any one have ANY ideas as to what could cause these numbers to be so far off the charts

the car is chipped with stage 2 chips and a lindsey boost enhancer but it passed in 2002 with the same setup with flying colors

Thank you in advance all ideas are surely welcome

    Jeff

  6. Been there, done that. Was a waste of time and money. The compressor is old and has worn parts, not just seals. Rebuilt from my dealer was just as much as a quality rebuilt anywhere else and the dealer is not somebody you have never seen over the internet. I got lucky when I ordered the compressor from the dealer, a brand new one came. Same price.

I am real pickey about A/C. As in it better work, its been hot in Texas and everywhere else for that matter.

I took a deep breath and took it to my Indy and had the compressor, dryer, condensor, hoses, and expansion valve replaced. It works and it's all warrantied.

    David

the AC compressor on my daughter's 944S seeps oil/freon from the center seam of the compressor - otherwise works fine - so, time to change the o-rings and the front seal. The process for changing the seal is described in the service manual, along with special tools to use. I have a reasonable home machine shop (4 ft metal lathe, horiz/vertical mill, etc) and can easily make most of the stuff, but there is a puller for removing the clutch assembly that threads into the hub of the pulley - I can't (easily) cut metric threads, so I either need to buy this tool, find out what the threads are so I can find something with the right threads, or borrow one.

    I found this tool

    http://www.handsontools.com/store-products...nt%3E_1066.html

but I have no way to find out if it right for my compressor (I have the 10P15E compressor) - does anyone know if this tool fits? or where to find a tool that fits, or even, what threads are required so I can cut them myself?? Or (joy of joy) anyone near los angeles that would care to lend me a set of the tools- that would be amazing -

I can, of course, pull the assembly several other ways, but the way in the manual seems like the best - after all, it's the "factory way".

following up, I found a listing of needed tools for Porsche (and other) AC service here

    http://www.mastercool.com/manual/form10.pdf

and that list confirms that the above tool is the right one - so I guess I answered part of my own question-

but has anyone else done this type of rebuild? any comments or hints? it ought to be easy, but who knows?

oh, I'm ordering the kit of O-rings from here polarbearinc.com

  7. Hi, did anybody find an easy to put these sliders back in place?

I cleant mine today with a fine, long-haired brush and suddenly 2 of them just fell off.... I couldn't believe it and tried to figure out how they are attached. I moved one of the remaining ones to check how it works and voila, the 3rd one was broken....

It seems that if you move the slider to an extreme position (left or right) it just pops out :cursing:

The car is under warranty, so no problem to get this fixed... but are the new ones better? Did they change the design?

    Wolfgang

Yes the design was changed. Mine broke 1 month in. Dealer replaced....

  8. So what were the part #'s used for the install.

Well, I just got my wheel replaced and want to post some real world info.

Sorry for the confusion but in the 997 the wiring harness for the multi-function wheel is actually installed even if you don't have that option (at least mine was).

After install however, you will have to have the new multi-function wheel activated/programmed with the Porsche Dealer equipment. Not only do you need this to use the multi-function buttons but you need it to also activate the Tiptronic rocker switches on the wheel so your car will be straight auto only until you have it done.

  9. I have gotten as far as the wheel itself and the module for the steering wheel. The dealers head mechinanic did not have any information or documentation for retrofitting so I put it off. This was about 8 months ago.

The signals from the controller are combiled and relayed via a single core cable (optic?). This appears to then go to the combined steering column module (we already have) and is then processed for CAN transmission.

So you have the wheel itself, the module (may require very minimal wiring), and a connection to the steering module. Then coding with PIWIS.

Since you have reminded me of this and bonuses are in I am going to shoot an email to the mechanic and see if any retroffiting news has come in for this.

Since all of these goodies are driven by additional modules passing information to the PCM, I personally think Chrono could be added without the clock as well. Time will tell and of course there is no telling about the $$$.

    David

So.............I've been told two different things:

-The wiring loom is configured at the time of the build so if the car didn't have the MF Wheel, the wiring for it would not be there. You would have to have the wiring put in and then you would have to have the functionality programmed by a dealer using the System Tester. $$$$ to have the wiring done.

-The steering wheel wiring loom is a standard config and the connections are shipped with all 996/997 models. In this scenario you can do the install yourself but you still need the buttons programmed using the PST2.

Any pros here know the truth?

  10. The change was made in production around April 2005.

I read that one of the improvements for 2006 is the ability of the CD player to play MP3s. Does anyone know if there is any way to upgrade a 2005? That's one thing I miss in the Boxster.

    Ciao !

You either have to swap out the entire unit for the latest PCM sat nav unit or buy a new Boxster/Cayman...... neither of which is cheap!

Another option is to hook up an MP3 player but thats not easy either....... Denison are hopefully going to produce a connector cable that works with the Porsche system so that you can plug in your iPod

Following up on that - did the 2005 PCM unit have MP3 capability? Or was that new in 2006?
