  1. I've got a case of m1 0w-40 left because that's what my audi gets, i was wondering if i should use something more viscous for the boxster as it's engine gets a bit warmer judging by the water temp guage

    anybody have any opinions? it's supposed to be a hot summer and it's a black car, should I just use the 0w-40 I've got or go higher? I figure I'll change it again before it gets cold if that matters.

  2. I'd suggest against most aftermarket mufflers if droning noise can be bothersome, with my SuperSprint I got a headache driving to work and back but if I were only driving it on weekends I probably would have kept it, it did sound awesome above 3k but in traffic it was deadly

    of course if you want to try one I've got one that I'd let go cheap (tips too)

    Are you still intrested in selling the supersprint? I might be interested for my 2001 2.7?

  3. Ditto on what Orient Express said. If it is RMS, definitely make sure the oil filter is changed (which isn't done unless asked). You'll need to change the cabin filter as well (5 min close to the battery under front trunk).

    You said you are losing oil but the oil level hasn't dropped. Check oil level when engine is cold with the dip stick when car is flat. The pic doesn't seem like RMS to me either.

    yup, it's lost what I'm guessing as 1/2 a digital bar, sometimes it shows 1 down, sometimes it shows full, on the stick it's just a smidge lower than when i got it so I don't think it's dropped 1/2 a quart and I figured that since the car was used so little before I bought it that this would be normal for a little while

    guess I'll take it in just to be safe, that's a fair gamble :)

    Fingers crossed im just in the process of buying a 1999 boxtser S and after some advice.

    First, should I be concered of 70,000 miles?

    Second, what do you advise to have a good look at and check when picking it up?

    you may want to double check the car's model, the S started in model year 2000

  5. so I drove a lot since november and just turned 14k miles, I figure I'll hit 15k in a month but some time before then my regular warrantee runs out and the CPO kicks in

    I know the majority of the service I can handle, my question is this, is it worth bringing the car in for them to do the inspection and get the RMS replaced if the see fit? I understand the cost to be $350-500 so the parts would be a good bit less ($150ish I figure)

    it doesn't drip in the garage, nor has my oil level dropped noticably over the 5k miles (not even a bar on the digital display)

    any advice?

  6. Does anyone know whether the GAHH top will re-use my headliner? I've grown rather attached to the extra insulation and soundproofing, and don't want to give it up in exchange for a glass window.

    while I don't have one so I can't comment from personal experience, I'm quite sure it will reuse the headliner, as I understand it the headliner attaches to the frame, not the canvas top, so nothing changes there, I think they even sell a new headliner for cars that didn't come with one

  7. mine was stuck so tightly that i needed to use pliers on both rings to pull it out, it felt as if there was adhesive holding it but I found no evidence of it, once it let go the first time it was still very snug and I still needed pliers each time I've pulled it since

    then to get them out I had to push the radio's clips in from the sides to release the rings, they wouldn't let go on their own no matter what

    What is the difference between the short shifter kits and the original stick? The travel is shorter, but how is it acheived?

    I was wondering to cut the original shifter just 1" shorter (I don´t like the looks of the original one, it looks too long).

    Is it a crazy idea? I did a similar thing many years ago for my Pontiac Fiero...

    it's usually shortened by changing the fulcrum position instead of the lenght of the lever which keeps the stick the same length but changes the distance you have to move the stick

    a couple problems with actually cutting the stick is not only would you have to rethread it, but you'd lose a good chunk of leverage

    there were 2 ways, one was connecting 2 pins in the relay essentially turning it into a solid connection so it didn't turn off the fogs when you hit the highbeams

    the other was to remove the relay and put a wire between 2 of the contacts, it had the same effect but wasn't as readily apparent

    I don't remember which pins though

  10. why not go with the Porsche Sport Exhaust? if droning is bothersome yet you like the loud top end then it may be perfect

  11. I have a re-occurring problem with my window washer tank - the hose somehow keeps working loose. When I refill the washer tank on my 2001 Boxster the water runs straight out again.

    Does anyone have any pictures or description of how to access the washer tank and rectify a loose window washer hose to the window washer tank?

    I looked this over in the bentley manual a few days ago, it shows that to remove it, or get access to it's underside, that you have to take off the driver's side wheel well liner, after you do that everything is right there

    if you've got a set of jack stands you can probably get access to it in 30 minutes or so

  12. In the center console: 4 wire connector, under the drivers seat, three connectors is one of these for heated seats?, in the battery cowl 2 two wire connectors what are these for?

    the top two behind the battery are the heaters for the washer jet nozzles, bottom left is the phone connector, bottom right I don't know

    the washer jets have to be unplugged to remove the cowl, other than that I can't think of a reason for them to be off, the phone is only plugged in if you have the phone option

  13. I just did a very similar install, though with a sirius radio, and I've got a question

    before the ground loop isolater was installed I had loud whine that would get louder with engine speed, after the isolater was installed the noise is greatly reduced but still there, I can only hear it on talk stations and during pauses in the music

    the noise isn't there when I use the FM modulator so I'm thinking it's related to the AUX in for the CD220, but I'm not sure what to check on with that

  14. I mounted my Sirius antenna next to the pollen filter. I get great reception and it is completely hidden. I highly recommend this approach.

    I used velcro to stick the antenna up underneath the plastic windshield cowl.

    yeah so far the reception is great, but I have a slight problem, even with the ground loop isolater I've got an engine speed based whine in the speakers through the Aux input, sounds like dirty power still but I'm not sure what to do to get it any cleaner

  15. Jay,

    assuming you have the stock exhaust on currently, 3 hours shouldn't be hard at all

    the toughest part of removing the exhaust on my 02 S was the crappy rusted aftermarket clamps that were installed to make the SuperSprint exhaust fit, getting that damned thing off took me damned near 5 hours

    putting the porsche exhaust on took about 1 hour

    the sleeves may need some coaxing with a rubber mallet, and or a torch, but they will slide, and once they do the entire exhaust will come off with the two bolts that hold it to the transmission

    the two bolts are actually pretty easy once you find them with your hand, the only thing you'll need is a regular (not deep, it won't fit) socket, the smallest extension you can find (1/2 inch, or 3/4, I can't remember) then a universal joint, then a 5 inch extension

    it's a tight fit, a deep socket is too long to fit, a regular one is too short

    once you undo those two bolts it'll fall right down, and to remount the other will be just as easy, you may want to buy new nuts, sleeves, and clamps though

    as for the wiring you'll need to do, that may actually take more time that it will to exchange the muffler

    I wonder if I'd need a better antenna than what my tuner came with, I notice that one is a Terk which I think are usually sold as "better" antennas

    I had tried putting the antenna next to the pollen filter (an a 04 C4S) and got good, but not great results. I then pulled the front bumper cover and mounted the antenna to the front bumper. This seems to work well. It is invisible, and gets good reception. I think that next to the pollen filter has the issue of being in the shadow of the window frame (and roof in my car). This may be less of an issue in a boxster.

    I wish I'd had the radio to install a few weeks ago since I'd taken the bumper cover off to replace the horns, but I wasn't about to do that again today so I put it very near the pollen filter, I'll post pics and results tomorrow after I've given it a test drive
