  1. I called up my mechanic, TRE Motorsports in Van Nuys, and they'll do it for $20. Beats the $100 quote I got from the first guys I called.
  2. Jarvis/Loren, I have the same issue with the airbag light being on after taking the airbag out to reinforce the rubber bushings on the retaining frame. Are there any forum members in the San Fernando Valley with a PST2 or PIWIS who would be willing to reset the light for me? I called up a local shop and they wanted $100 which seems a bit steep. Thank you, Tim
  3. Thanks, all, for your solutions. I fixed the fan a couple of years back but forgot to post about it. Taking JFP in PA's advice I tweaked the part number and found a part out of a VW on Ebay for $10. It took me less than an hour to install and saved me closed to $1,000.
  4. Hi folks, the cabin fan on my '97 Boxster had been making the most awful thumping noise every time I turned it on. I finally took it out and discovered that the motor had been misaligned in its housing which had caused the blade to rub up against the housing and to break off. Where can I find just the plastic fan blade? The motor seems to be spinning just fine and I'd rather not have to replace the entire thing for $300 if I don't have to: http://www.pelicanpa...VENTht_pg1.htm. Thank you, Tim
  5. Hi, I have a '97 Boxster and recently the electronic forward seat tilt adjustment stopped working. The backwards tilt still works and and kept fiddling with it and now the seat is tilted all the way back against the rear windscreen. Is there a mechanical way that I can reset the positioning of the seat forward again? Is there a way that I can troubleshoot the electrical problem without taking the seat out (I'm pretty novice with electronics)? Thank you very much for your assistance. Tim
  6. Hi, I have a '97 Boxster and it failed the California smog inspection. I took it to my Porsche mechanic (TRE in Van Nuys) and he told me they ran some tests on it and it was the Catalytic Converter, not the O2 sensors, and that it would cost $2600 to fix. My question for you is, does this price seem right (he says he has to order the part from Porsche) and if so could someone like Midas do it for a lot cheaper? I don't want to put a bunch of money into it because I'm thinking of selling it but I'm not able to sell it in California without an emissions certificate. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Tim
  7. Hi, the plastic rear window on my '97 Boxster is starting to pull away from the stiching on both the left and the right sides where the window folds (see attached picture). Right now the affected area is about one inch on each side. Is there a way to repair this without having to replace the window? A descrete amout of glue? Restitch the affected area? Thanks for the help, Tim '97 Boxster
  8. 2) So I figured out what the clickin noise was. It's my horn relay. When I first got the car, the horn would go off at the slightest bump (I've read the articles on fixing this) and then one day the horn just stopped working. The clicking noise only recently started though. If I touch the horn I hear the same light click that I hear while driving over bumps. My question is, why isn't the horn going off all the time? Wouldn't the clicking indicate that the relay is engaging properly? Could there be a problem with the horn itself? Any recomendations on a diagnosis?
  9. Update: 1) The fan seems to have righted itself - I'm not hearing any more rattling from the center console, maybe there was just a piece of something that got stuck in there then worked itself out. 2) On further inspection the clicking noise that I hear when I go over bumps and when I brake seems to be coming from the left side of the driver's floor, and it sounds like a relay quickly engaging/disengaging (sort of like the click that the clutch makes when it engages). My mechanic drove it around the block then looked under and tried to tighten any loose relays - but, could the problem be inside of one of the relays? Has anyone had a similar problem occur before or have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?
  10. I just picked up my '97 from getting the air conditioner serviced - they recharged the freon and fixed some electrical problem. Now when I turn my fan on (regardless of air conditioner being on) the fan seems to rattle, maybe like there's a loose bearing or something. The sound comes from the center console. Also, there's a squeaking sound that comes from far left vent. It almost sounds like springs in a seat. This happens independently of the fan and seems to occur when braking or driving over bumps. My question is, is this something caused by the shop - (they didn't put something together right) and is it reasonable to have them look at it free of charge since neither of these things were occurring when I brought the car in? Thanks, Tim '97 Boxster
  11. Is there a way to get the passenger side mirror to tilt when you put the car into reverse? I have a '97. I've read other threads that say it's possible if you have memory seats but I do not have those. Thanks, Tim
  12. Is there any documentation on how the alarm system is supposed to work for my '97 Boxster? The reason I ask is because I want to make sure it's working properly. When I lock my doors using the remote the lights flash a couple times and then the horn beeps once. After a few seconds the dashboard light starts to flash. I've read on this board that if the horn beeps then something isn't closed right, or more probably, a sensor somewhere is bad. Also, I haven't really tried, but what does it take to make the alarm go off? I've lifted the door handles and even given it a little shake but nothing happened. Thanks in advance for your assistance, Tim
  13. Is the mirror-tilt function available on a '97 without automatic seat adjustment?
  14. Please help. I walked out to my car after a short drive and discovered steam coming out of the right side engine vent on my '97 Boxster and coolant coming out from underneath. I drove the car home carefully and the temperature stayed around 180, the engine light was on. After reading these previous posts I checked my coolant cap (fine) and under the carpet of my trunk (fine). I looked in the engine bay but couldn't see anything obvious (there are so many engine parts in the way). Is there anything that the mechanically un-inclined, like me, could to do try to trouble-shoot the leak without a bunch of fancy tools before taking it to the shop? Also, if/when I do take it in will it be ok to drive the 15 highway miles if I fill the coolant back up first? Thank you all in advance for your replies, Tim p.s. There does not apear to be any oil mixed in with the coolant.
  15. Ouch, I guess that'll be expensive if it's the same problem as Oracle10g had. Can anyone recomend a reputable repair shop in the LA/Pasadena area?
  16. I'm having the same problem on my '97 boxster that I recently purchased. When I turn on the AC the RPMs change but cold air doesn't come out. Is there anything that I can check myself before taking it to a shop (relay, switch)? Thanks, Tim
  17. I found this really good description with pictures. http://www.bombaydigital.com/boxster/projects/headlamp/
  18. I have a left headlamp bulb (stock?) that has become rather dim and I would like to replace it. Could someone refer me to instructions on removing the bub, or even tell me how a bulb becomes dim but doesn't burn out? This is the regular light, not the bright light. Regards, Tim '97 Boxster
  19. Oy vey, the previous owner had a 20 amp fuse in that slot and I didn't even bother to check the fuse guide before replacing it with another 20. I just put a 30a in tonight and hopefully that will do the trick. Thank you for your reply Tool Pants. I wonder why in the three months that I've owned the car it didn't blow until yesterday. Tim
  20. Yesterday my '97 Boxster blew a fuse for the electric windows (slot D1, 20amp) when I lowered my convertible top. After replacing the fuse the windows rolled up and down fine until I activated the top again, which of course blew out the fuse again. Has this happened to anyone else out there before? Where should I look in diagnosing the problem? Everything is stock and I don't have any accessories plugged into the car. Thanks, Tim I just remembered, the car did get rained on this weekend, which doesn't happen all that often here in Los Angeles. Could water have gotten in some where and affected it? Everything appears dry in the cabin.
  21. Thanks, you were right, the extra pull was all it needed.
  22. Is there some sort of trick to removing the fuse panel on my '97 Boxster? The manual says to "pull the cover off at the finger hole" but my doesn't seem to budge and I don't want to crack the plastic. Thanks, Tim
  23. Has any one tried using those airbag cover-up decals that they're selling on ebay, and if so how do you like them? Are there other solutions that people have used to cover up or remove the label which apears to be pretty securely painted on?
