  1. The car has done 1150 miles. The sound was there from the start. It is pretty quiet but irritating. No problem with oil level or oil pressure. I think it is more of a quiet vibration than a ticking, at 3000rpm and again at about 4500rpm. I wonder if it is anything to do with the sports exhaust. It occurs whether the sports exhaust is switched off or on. Having said that, I hear a very similar sound in my 2.5L Boxster 986 which is 7 years old and has no sports exhaust. As for breaking in - yes I was quite gentle with it. Unlike USA where I think the advice is below 4200rpm for first 2000miles, in UK Porsche gives no specific advice. I kept below 4200 to 500miles, below 5000 to 1000miles and am still below 5500prm. I also allow the engine and oil to warm up fully before increasing the revs and vary the engine speed regularly. Just one more thought... It's a cab with a fitted hard top, which I haven't yet removed. I just wonder if removing it might make any difference... Any advice is appreciated !
  2. I am trying to figure out the cause of a ticking/vibrating sound from the engine. I have a 2006 997 C4S tip cab. The sound occurs at 3000 rpm and continues if I stay at that engine speed. It then seems to disappear at a higher speed, only to return at about 4500-5000 rpm. Sometimes it is if the engine is cold, other times it is when the engine is well warmed up. My 986 Boxster sometimes makes a similar quieter sound at around 3000 rpm. Is it to do with some valves or tappets? Could it be a chain? Someone told me it may be the oil pressure release valve. Should I take it in for checking - is an adjustment needed? :help: Thanks very much for an excellent forum
