My 1999 986 Boxster 5 speed manual started having a slight grind when shifting from 4th to 5th. I am trying to figure out best procedure to repair this issue. Hoping it's not the synchro. I did an out change just before I noticed this issue. What procedures do you recommend to trouble shoot the problem?
If the gear box is going, do you know if the 5 speed transmission can be replaced with a 6 speed manual transmission?

I hope they gave you a loaner car to use while yours was being worked on. Our local dealership does this. They charge $130 an hour (Orlando, Florida). I do not use them but I have a friend who is the Parts Manager there...

How did you obtain the serial number? Through the method in the Lost Radio Code FAQ?
Unfortunately 2565 did not work. ;-(Try 2565 - it should work.

Not sure what the correct term is but I had the same problem with my 1999. I had to replace the passenger side transmission for the top plus the motor due to the cable wore out the right side motor. Cost about a grand due to labor...
If someone charged you to replace a "right side motor" you were charged for a non-existent part  .
All 986 and 987 Boxsters have only one electric motor, located on the rear firewall of the convertible top well and that motor drives both transmissions by means of drive cables.
Regards, Maurice.
Sorry, one motor but the right side of the old one was not in sync with the left side so the motor needed to be replaced.

Stopped by my local Porsche dealer this morning to kick tires and sit in a new Boxster. I own a 1999 986. I have 142,000 miles. Met a man there who drove his 2000 986 who had over 350,000. I was impressed...
