  1. I wouldn't think so. I followed the DIY and ended up using the switch for the '97 Audi A8 from NAPA. Worked perfectly. Renntech 996 Ignition Switch DIY
  2. Great, I'll try that out. The mechanic estimated a ~$600 fix (replacing the entire coded ignition unit) when I talked to him about the problem. :renntech:
  3. Whenever I start my car, the ignition switch in my 2001 996 does not snap back to the run position from the start position. Is there a way to clean out any potential grime that might have built up? Also, if the return spring has indeed failed, can it be replaced separately from the entire ignition cylinder? Thanks for your help.
  4. Update: In order to replace the front passenger's-side brake line , it is necessary to pull the gas tank. I spoke with ~5 Porsche specialists in town and no one had the necessary tools / or was willing to expose themselves to the liability associated with re-flaring the line. The cost of me purchasing the double flaring tool & loaning it to a shop to do the work is ~ to the cost of having someone pull the tank and replace the line. At this point, I don't really have the time or inclination to do the work myself. The car is sitting on a lift and waiting for the new brake line to arrive.
  5. Sorry, I actually searched, "porshe 996 workshop manual." 996 Workshop Manual
  6. Wvicary, that's an excellent suggestion. Unfortunately, I think that the extent of the damage is such that the fitting will have to be replaced. I guess this was one car problem that couldn't be solved with MORE torque.
  7. How's the quality of the scan? I've seen that site, but was wary of downloading an illegible document. Hi I got mine from www.workshopmanuals.co.uk and they are all crystal clear. They look as though they were transfered to disc by Porsche Maybe they were. But the quality is very good. and it includes the PET manuals on GT3 and the GT. ViolaGT3, you seem to have the answers to all of my renntech queries this week. :clapping:
  8. I wasn't able to find it by navigating through their website, either. Instead, I googled something like "996 workshop manual uk." That brought me to the correct page on www.workshopmanuals.co.uk. Weird.
  9. Thanks Viola and Loren, that's exactly the information I was looking for. Part 9 in that diagram is what I've stripped. :renntech: I've also considered cutting off the end of the hard line, replacing the stripped fitting, and re-flaring the line. I'm thinking that this may be simpler, if I could do it while the line was still on the car. Any thoughts on this approach?
  10. While installing SS brake lines and managed to partially strip the nut at the end of the hard line on the front passenger side. How is this line routed through the car, and does anyone have any instructions or technical drawings that would be pertinent to replacing it? Any help would be much appreciated, as I would really like to have my right-front brake working again.
  11. How's the quality of the scan? I've seen that site, but was wary of downloading an illegible document.
  12. I've been looking into this as well. If you don't mind spending $$$ to get the best, the Pioneer AVIC Z1 has all the bells and whistles. Hard drive to store the nav maps and music, voice command, 7" screen, BT, etc. The Eclipse units are also nice, The AVN5945 has a HD but only a 6.5" screen. Although the Kenwood unit (I forgot the model) is a double DIN, you have to use an external box to get the navigation function. Pioneer also makes a less expensive double DIN unit, the AVIC D2, that doesn't have as many features as the Z1. It's DVD based, rather than having a HD, no BT, no voice command, 6.5", etc. It also can't play DVD movies, which I thought was weird since the nav is DVD based. I think it really comes down to going to a stereo store and messing around with the different models. Pick the one that's the easiest to use, for you and has the features you want. For me, the added functionality of the Z1 wasn't worth the difference in price, so I'm going with the D2. I could go on... I've spent way too much time looking at these things recently.
