  1. I have not hooked up the changer to PCM1, but I think it is the same as the standard radio.

The changer wiring harness should have a green and blue plug. Green goes to C2 and blue to C3, which should be next to a yellow plug that is C1.

Next pic is the standard radio and you can see the green and blue changer plugs in.

Last pic is the back of a PCM unit, and I have put green and yellow lines to where I think the changer plugs go.

If my PCM1 pic is correct and you already have something in C2 and C3, then do you have aux-in or a phone or something?

thanks toolpants...it was my mistake. i didnt realise that the blue and green plugs fit next to the yellow plug...i just didnt give it enough attention before asking for help  ill connect it up tomorrow and let you know how it works

thanks again for your help.

  2. hi everybody

    thanks in advance

  3. Hello,

I have just taken my Porsche for a spin on the German Autobahn. As there was no speed limit I drove the car at about 160 miles for something like five minutes. Then I noticed a flashing light from the temp gauge. I found a spot where I could park the car and waited for about five minutes. The light had stopped flashing and did not go on again. According to the instruction manual a flashing light from the temp gauge indicates that the deck lid fan does not function properly.

I have already found some very useful information on this forum, so I know that the fan itself works, that the fuse is OK. I have also found the temp sensor in the engine compartment. According to one of the forum members the fan should go on when disconnecting the probe. I tried this (yes, ignition on), but nothing happened.

As to my questions. Have I forgotten anything? Is it perhaps possible to connect the two cables that go to the probe to test the fan. If it is indeed a malfunctioning probe, how do I test this? If it is the probe, how do I remove it? Any idea how much would this probe could cost?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello again,

Ever so stupid. I forgot to mention that I own a Porsche 996 C4 (November 1998)

  4. Here they are:

thanks, but i thought the pics might show exactly what they did so that i might consider doing somthing simalar mysellf as i cant seem to get rid of the noise as yet...and if it worked i would at least know what exactly is causing it!!

Nothing mysterious about it. Just insert a 10" piece of the grey rubber foam that is normally used to stop the rattle in the rear window between the overlapping lips of the door seal. If it works, glue it down. Done.

got that noise problem solved at last!!!

i removed the mirror, took of all the mirror seals and bits of foam rubber, cleaned everything. then reasembled using copious amounts of vaseline. when i assembled it all and tightend the mirror screws it oozed out of the joints :D ...i was really happy that even on a very windy day like today that the noise has completly disapeared :clapping:

now i know where the problem is..and should it come back i will buy all new seals and apply silicon rubber to the places where i suspect that the wind gets through.

thorsten, i also found a length of foam rubber cord in between the door rubber seal...so somebody has allready tried to do a fix in the past. probably some porsche zentrum mech.....i took it out. being a mechanic myself (aircraft) i think that is a cheap bodge, if i did somthing like that in my job i would get a kick up the butt.

  5. Perplex...is the simple word i can think of that reflects my state of mind!

know exactly how you feel..i spent money on a car that is normally out of reach for people that earn the money that i do...and then i had to have a new engine and pay for it myself...i must admit, i have lost faith.

what was your particular situation? what yr & model is your ride?

i posted a topic about my little personal porsche desaster a few weeks ago:

  6. I just realized that I never told the end of the story: Well I went to the dealer which had replaced the door and made him fix the problem under warranty. Basically what they did is insert a piece of foam rubber cord of about 25cm in the overlapping lips of the door seal running along the a pillar. When I picked the car up I thought they had adjusted the window according to Porsches specs because after a quick run on the autobahn I found the noise was gone. Since I'm curious I inspected the area and found a bump in the door seal which turned out to be the the mentioned rubber cord. The moment I put my hands on it the whole thing just fell out. Well I was p***d of course. Immediately took the car to the dealer again and lectured the service manager (who I consider to be an a-hole) about adjusting the windows and how it is done. From the way they looked at me I could tell they didn't even know what I was talking about which left me almost speechless. I also stated that I don't consider stuffing some foam in there a Porsche-like fix.

I finally ended up with a glued-in rubber cord and a non-whistling window. Needless to say this backed up my decision to never go there again.

I'm not a home right now but will add a pic as soon as I come home.

    Thorsten

you home yet thorsten? im really curious to see the pics.

  7. i have exactly the same...i have tried adjusting the window so that it goes up a little higher because i thought it might not be sitting properly in the seal and i also noticed that i wasent going up as high as the passenger side which doesent make any wind noise at all in comparision, but it didnt help. i havent got round to trying a little more yet. its annoying me big time. i shall be doing some more "adjusting" tomorrow and ill let you know if it has helped at all. i too am thinking along the lines that it might be the seal as the drivers door is obviously used alot more than the passenger door.

  8. Glad to help. Trying to give a little back! :)

Remember there is an adjuster on the other side too. I would think if you turned each adjuster the same amount of turns, you'll keep the window level (I'm sure you are aware of that).

    -Darren

great pictures and explanation Darren..i have wind noise coming from my drivers window in the mirror area which i think is turbulance noise getting through because the glass might not be going all the way up...ill try the adjustments and see what happens.

  9. Kelvin, at least before blowing your engine you had some few times of glory cruising at 270!

When I blown it, I was stopped at the traffic light... the noise was exactly tha same you described (I thought to an OM Leoncino - a '50-'60 italian small truck)

    This is my story http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4501&hl=

(I don't know if the link works but in case you can search here for the title of the 3D "another (?) 996 3.4 engine broken..., is normal that a serviced 67.000 Km...".

At last I've spent 11.000 euro for engine, clutch and flywheel replacement.

Since, due to the low mileage, I claimed for extra warranty, after 6 months I had back 1K from Porsche as 30% of the only replacement engine list price (5870€ + VAT).

The "funny" think (it would be very funny to see how this would be considered in a trial...) is that the "opening the engine for failure search" - must for claiming the warranty - costed me 1K.... :censored:

I'm very very very nauseated from Porsche...

i understand your "nauseation" only too well.....i think there are a lot of people out there who dont have a warranty and are now rather anxious about if their engines are gonna hold out or not...bad news when you think of the reputation porsche have got..it seems to me as if they are just sitting back on a under false pretences earned reputation in their (porsche designed?) office chairs while the porsche shares are going up and up and not spending enough of the millions that they earn helping owners of blown low milleage and correctly maintained engines that bought the product "porsche" thinking that they were buying an engineering masterpiece...i have even heard of problems occuring with the 997! dont they care at all?

anyhow...i still love the car (isnt that strange?)..lets enjoy our cars so long as they are under warranty...im gonna give my engine hell!!!! :drive:

  10. I have been reading all of the posts about engine failure and it scares the hell out of me!!

I have a 99 C2 that I bought 2 years ago with 45k mils on it. It now has 58k. I have never had one single problem with it. Im the third owner. Looking through the records the car has never had a problem of any kind mechanically. I've changed the oil and that's it. :clapping:

Im about to do the 60k maintainance. Any tips about things that should be checked??? (besides the usual 60k items).

I have had BMW's and BENZ's in the past and they were nothing but headaches and breakdowns.

My Porsche has been a real treat to own. I drive it hard but dont beat it up.

I'm so sorry that you guys have these horror stories and have taken such a financial beating.

Any advice to look for any suspicious engine problems would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and good luck with your new engines

i sincerly hope that your engine holds out...i had no warnings, there was no indication that anything was about to happen, the car had all the inspections done at an official dealership and the large inspection at 80000km was also done with a comment " great condition"

i shall be picking my car up tomorrow, with a new engine and 2 years garantie. im really looking forward to it..but how will i feel after 2 years? ill tell you, SCARED

  11. I feel really sorry for your troubles and at the same time it certainly is a cause for worry for those of us that haven't had any of these problems YET!

Does anyone know statistically how many engines out of total production these terrible failures affected?

As someone else said makes one wonder about the reliability and engineering of the entire species!

Dont get too many horror stories like these about small block Chev motors!

the horror story goes on and on...i got a tip from the official porsche dealership that a very good non-official porsche workshop might be able to help...the guy said he could get me an exchange engine from porsche with 2 year porsche warranty within a week and 3000 euros cheaper than the "porsche zentrum". so i was real happy and contracted him to get my car towed to his workshop. i was really looking forward to getting a brand new engine with all the periferals (have i spellt that right?) even a new exhaust is included!

he called me yesterday with the bad news. porsche raised their prices almost 50% for exchange engines on march 1st. so it was gonna cost the same as the porsche zentrum...unfortunatly i didnt have any written price confirmation or repair contract so i lost out again...im gutted.

the info above is not quite correct, porsche raised their prices on feb 1st and not as drastic as i was told initially. ..im getting a new exchange engine with 2 year porsche garantie for 11000 euros including all fluids and work. its gonne hurt but not so much as the 13000 i was quoted from an official porsche dealership.

  13. C'mon, this has been doing the rounds for over a year now. I thought everyone had seen it by now...

    Obviously not...

@happy911: if you are talking about my bike incident back then - yes I went away okay. My shoulder hurt for a few weeks and my leather clothes looked about the same as the seats in the Boxster. People were staring at me quite a bit when I pulled off at the next gas station

Guess I looked like Jason after a hard night of slaughter :P

    Thorsten

happened to me on my ducati..a seagull hit the left hand headlight and just disintergreted, i saw the **** thing coming at me in like slow motion before it hit, but couldnt do anything to avoid it because of the high speed...i suppose it commited suicide. i looked like a butchers shop front window after that...had to use a pressure wash at the gas station to get everything of my leathers helmet and bike, and pooh what a smell!!
