  2. Anyone know what typical oil consumption looks like in these cars? had mine about a month now, oil level checker on startup has dropped one bar. No oil leaks that I can see. this normal? does the oil in these need topped off every so often or what?
  3. Hello all, Just traded my 04 Cayenne in on my first 996. its a 2004, one previous owner, 45K miles. This car is like new no kidding. I have owned a 1970 911 targa and an 04 cayenne. Never a 'modern' 911. Can anyone offer any advice or FYI's? Storage for winter, things to do or not do, what to watch for, any easy upgrades I should go for, etc.? Thanks ahead of time!
  4. I climbed in my 04 Cayenne this morning and turned on the heat to maximum. Hot air blew from the passenger side and cold air from the drivers side vents. I have been combing the forums today and all I can come up with is that the issue may be a "controller", "servo motors" or both. Can anyone weigh in on this? What is the "controller", what exactly are the "servo motors" called? I cannot find descriptions, part numbers or DIY directions on changing them. I would like to price them out to consider DIY but I am stuck. someone help please... :eek:
  5. FYI for anyone attempting this. I did it over the weekend, the top 3 coolant line MUST be removed if you have the aluminum pipes. The starter will not come out, the mounting bracket on it is too wide and will not get past the pipes. Complete removal is not necessary, you can drain out some of the coolant and remove the bolts and line from thermostat housing and lift them up slightly to get the starter out and new one in. This was an 8+ hour job and exhausting to boot but saved me well over 1000$ doing it myself, not difficult at all.

  7. I am planning on replacing the starter on my 04 Cayenne S. I cannot seem to locate anyone that can answer these questions: 1. what are the torque settings and order for the air intake manifold bolts? 2. any suggestions from someone who has done a starter on removing the bottom bolt from the starter? It appears to be buried under the starter.. help..please..anyone?
  8. deilenberger, do you happen to know what the torque settings are for the intake manifold bolts? I am getting ready to replace my starter (since I was an idiot and didn't do it with the coolant pipe replacement) but can only locate a note from someone who said it was 17ft-lbish. just an fyi to anyone with the coolant pipe issue, you can get a starter off ebay for around 80$. that's what I paid for mine, its worth replacing at the same time as coolant pipes. I had my pipes replaced and here I am not 2 months after and I have to tear off that manifold AGAIN to replace the starter....

  11. My 04 CS has developed a new issue, anyone have any ideas with this... When the engine is started and running, doesn't matter if its started fresh or has been running hard for an hour, there is a distinct sharp ticking noise, very rapid, that sounds like its coming out of the throttle body on the top front of the motor. I have been through the threads and heard the various postings of the dreaded scored cylinder wall or slapping pistons, this sounds nothing like that, this is a sharp ticking noise and its not coming from the cylinders. Near as I can tell the noise is coming from the top center of the motor from or around the throttle body or even right below. its not loud either, you can only hear it if you open the hood and lean in. No faults, No engine light, some very very small rough idling when coming to a stop sometimes but runs ok, no burning oil, no leaks as far as I can tell anywhere. im stumped, 75K miles and I know its overdue for service. I am going to change coils, plugs, oil and filters soon so I wanna tackle this noise while I am doing that I just don't know where to start.
