  1. Have you ever seen a mechanic place a screwdriver near a bearing location then put his ear up to the handle and proclaim a bad bearing? A localized vibration sensor with a tuned DSP to watch for the failure harmonics would be an interesting diagnostic.
  2. I'm such a sucker, I couldn't help but reply to them. It's simple for me, my Porsche is so much fun I feel guilty for the rest of the poor slobs driving to work every day.
  3. I've got 5,500miles on a set of those V12s over the summer. (Phoenix) No track days yet so I can't answer your direct questions however so far I have been very impressed with them so far.
  4. Just bought some inexpensive Hankook tires, wish me luck.

  5. I have both the wind noise as well as the problem with the window when fully up is interfering with the stationary rear side window. In fact I have to lower the driver side window just to open or close the door otherwise I'm afraid the glass will shatter hitting the rear glass. Time to tear the door panels apart. [Edit] Took the door apart, looks like the rear window clamp was too loose and allowed the window to drop down about 1/3 of an inch. That tilts the window back enough that it was hitting the stationary window at the top when fully up. I raised it up and re-tightened the clamp and it looks good now when closed. There is an even gap of 1/4" from top to bottom.
  6. I believe the 160 degree thermostat is recommended because there is an assumption that there is enough cooling capacity for the system to keep the water temp below 180 degrees. If that assumption is true (given specific conditions, speed ambient air temp, ...) then the lower thermostat would translate into a lower maximum operating temperature. I too see 218 degrees (c6 display) while driving in traffic and we've only just started to hit 90 degrees ambient here in Phoenix. I've used the car for my daily commute for the past three years but was until recently unaware of the c6 ODS display. 118 degree ambient is not at all abnormal around here... I think before the garage gets any warmer I'll pull my bumper skin and check for the debris around the radiators. I would love to do the third radiator as my next mod regardless. 7. Got the regulator UPS today from Sunset and got it installed. Thought I had an issue but Renntech saved me again... http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...646&hl=stop the shipped regulator had the two stops installed and I didn't notice so the window wouldn't go all the way down. Thanks again for the help all. :renntech:
  8. I left my office and got on a freeway and was cruising along for 5 min when it just felt wrong. I pulled over and everything looked ok (visually) so I got back in and as I took off I could tell something was very wrong. On closer inspection I saw it was flat so I tried to put some air in it with a small electric pump but it wouldn't take air. It was the right rear. I'm not sure if I got the nail on the freeway or if it was already flat when I left the office.
  9. Thought I'd share a photo I took of one of my rear tires that failed on a freeway on the way home a couple weeks ago. I knew something didn't feel right but those wide 25 series tires are impossible to visually inspect, the outer sidewall looked flawless. We found this when we dismounted them to see why they wouldn't hold air. Worse they were only a couple months old. There was a big nail hole in it. Do yourself a favor check the tire pressure in all your vehicles today.
  10. Just hit 86,000 miles Drive it to work 5 days a week at 50 miles round trip and average 22 mpg. At least one WOT on ramp per day. :)
  11. Passenger side window just failed on mine. Thanks for all the great info on how to get it repaired. I'm assuming my motor is fine as I can see some failures on the regulator. Some of the plastic cable attach points are broke and it looks like the steel cable jumped off one of the pulleys.
  12. Had to repair mine today. The cable end at the lever had pulled the loop out of the metal so all I had to do was rebend the loop and reattach it to the lever. It's suprising that the metal that is clamped to the cable is so soft. I also took apart the latch and added some more bend to the spring since it was just a bit too loose. It still 'feels' tough to pull the lever no matter how much adusting I did with the latch and with some lube. I'm sure if will fail again at some point. I also found that the forward most bolts on my front Cross coil overs were holding the plastic covers (over the pollen filter and other side) up a bit and it is rubbing the bottom of the bonnet hood. For now I just removed both covers and the battery cover to give the hood more room. I hope the bolts aren't hitting the hood! Not sure there is much I can do with it though. I'll have to take some picktures and post them to see if anyone else with the Cross suspension is having this issue.
  13. Paul, Were did you have yours done? Aprox how much did it cost? What are your thoughts on power & driveablility? Thanks, Shawn
  14. This just happened to me today as well. left will not auto cancel and right will not stay locked into position. Do we have a list of parts that need to be ordered for this DIY? '99 C2 - makes you wonder what other plastic might be ready to give up.
  15. Well I have the JIC Cross coil overs with medium spring rate on my light C2. I use it as a daily driver and ocasional track, but most people would say that the ride is VERY rough. Personally I love it.
  16. I threw some O2 codes last week. One was an O2 adaptation. I reset but it came back (solid check engine) the next day so I took it to the dealer. Turns out it was a vacume leak and the only way to get the line replaced was to drop the engine. I should get it back tomorrow... $1K rubber hose. Just over 75K miles btw.
  17. :offtopic: Sorry off topic, but count me in! It's interesting having a Porsche 996 and a Ducati 996. http://www.shekari.org/ducati.php
  18. Just did mine this moring. Thanks for the great writeup and pictures. I only have a couple comments based on my experience. 1) It isn't nessesary to completely remove the 4mm bolts to get the top plastic spoiler cover off or back on. It is easier to put on with the lid down so the rectangular washers stay open though. 2) The two plastic snaps on the top edges are possible to remove without destroying. It wasny easy but I was able to push the center part back through the snap allowing it to collapse and be pulled out and reused. 3) I 'lost' two fo the metal clips on the bottom bracket when they suddenly popped off. Where do all those little parts that fly off go anyway? hehe
  19. I'm a dumb ***... picked up a nail in the tire and didn't notice. Tire didn't go flat but was down to 25psi and that's what was causing the rubbing. Pressure back up to 40lbs and no more rubbing. :lightbulb: I found it when I checked the pressure to lower it a bit. Saw 25lbs and instantly knew that's why the tire had been rubbing the plastic.
  20. I got the new rotors and pads installed and found the noise. The wide rear tires have worn a hole through the plastic liner and the tread pattern at the edge of the tire is catching the edge of the plastic where it wore through. I'll snap a picture when I can in case this helpes someone else. At the moment I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with it. For reference the rears are 305/25 R19. more to come...
  21. I have 235/35 19" & 305/25 19" on my '99 996 have been using 44 in the rears for the past 6 months. The Pezero Rosso's are showing lots of wear in the middle and inner. Originally I had the pressure at 38lbs right after having a cross coil-over system installed and out at a track day I just didn't feel like I was getting enough rear rotation so I added the additional pressure. It helped a bunch at the track but between the tire pressure and the coil-overs set at mid compression dampening me and the car have been taking a beating around town. I'm going to drop back down to 38lbs for the street and see how it goes. Obviously I'll take it easy for a while as I know it can have DRASTIC effects on handling.
  22. Hey all! I have a '99 996 C2 that has 19" Champion wheels and Cross coil over suspension and a H&R rear sway bar. Mileage is at 75K. The brakes are in very poor shape and in fact today I ordered new rotors & pads and hardware from Sunset. (Thanks Jeff!) Lately I have been hearing a clicking or ticking sound when I first pull out of the garage and the frequency is tied to the speed of the wheel not the engine. I only hear the noise on the passenger rear and only at very slow speeds 1-10mph. I pulled the wheel off tonight and couldn't find anything that would make that noise. Any guesses? Thanks, Shawn
