2002 996 purchased five years ago with 60k miles. It’s at 119k now. Was a daily driver until a year ago when I started commuting on a motorcycle. 

Oil change once once a year .

original IMS. 

Water pump failed at 100k miles. 

Fuel pump failed at 115k 

This topic has been discussed thousands of times. I can sleep at night knowing I’m on the original IMS with 119,000 miles. 

If you can’t, go get it done. 🙂 

my boxster is a manual and my 911 is an auto. 

No exploding engine 

I purchased a 2002 with 60k and no IMS fix. I'm currently at 120k still with no IMS fix and will never get one. I'll take my chances. If you have money to waste, go for it. Won't hurt. 

Very happy with my 996. Original IMS and still running at 110k miles. 

I’m not a mechanic but I’m glad my guess was on the money. It started once for about 2 seconds then died. Subsequent attempts failed to start the car. Hence, I guessed that it must be fuel delivery issue. It started due to what ever amount that was left in the system before I shut off the car earlier from the last drive. 

There was no warning what so ever. I had to towed it to a shop and $700 later replaced. 

My 02 996 fuel pump failed. The durametric didn’t show any code. 

I hope that it’s user error. 

Just to confirm that I'm understanding this correctly. If I'm going to do a complete coolant system flush, the most logical thing to do is not to use the original Porsche coolant because there is no good reason to. This way I do not need to worry about contamination between Porsche and non Porsche coolants.

Are GEBA and PIEBURG water pumps OEM?

Can you provide some tips to removing the muffler without having to remove the rear panel?  

I would like to replace my spark plugs and water pump because it costs so much for a shop to do it. 

With that out of the way, is it easy to remove the muffler and rear bumber so that I can get an easier access to the plugs and water pump?

This already sounds like a messy job for someone like myself with no experience flushing coolant. Can I assume that a competent shop can do a complete flush with the right equipment? Or should I go to a Porsche "specialist"? :)

How many gallons do I need for a complete system flush? (2002 911 Carerra Tiptronic)   

I will be replacing the water pump soon. I assume this is the best time to do a complete flush?

I have no idea what type of coolant is in my car whether it's Porsche or not. It looks orange. What should I assume? Should I do a complete flush? What is the skills needed to do a complete system flush? 

I don't much but you guys are talking out of your a hole. It's a tiptronic for Chris sake! You're not going to have the same response as a pdk. Live with that fact and you're be fine.

Even in manual , the tiptronic still suck.

But who cares! People outside don't know you have an auto 911.

When I come to complete stop, the automatic tiptronic downshifts to 2nd and never to 1st gear. Is this normal?

If I want it to go to first, I would have manually press the downshift button.

If I'm at a stop and want to accelerate hard without using the manual, how would it know what I want to do?

Or I am forced to manually shift using the buttons?
