Yesterday I was at the Porsche dealer in Athens Greece having my key reprogrammed. I noticed that under the Left exhaust of my 2003 996 4S 6 speed there was a tiny puddle of coolant (3 inch radius). The mechanic checked the level and told me to add a little as it was low. He said this happens sometimes after one turns off the engine but to keep an eye on it. This is the first time I noticed the leak and 2 days later I noticed a couple of drops again.

Should I worry about this?

I appreciate any input.

By the way, it took abt 2 liters to bring the coolant up to the max level.

keep watching it, sounds like either a bad cap or possibly a cracked reservior. 2 L is a lot to add and is unlikely caused from an overfill expansion loss.

Thanks Nick, I bought this car three mos ago and had it checked by Porsche here and got a clean report. Is this somrthing they should have seen. I have only driven it about 1500 miles since then.

As I just learned recently this leak is most likely from the Coolant Reservoir - assuming you can't see it coming from the cap which would be pretty evident. Also, based on where mine cracked there is no way to know beforehand except at first you will notice a faint smell of coolant when you stop the car. Mine went from faint odor to 3" puddle to 6" puddle within 100 miles and 1 day.

I count six (6) coolant reservoir part number changes in the parts list...

Hi, think I have the same problem. Has anyone had this replaced under warranty as Porsche UK are saying it's not a warranty part?

Its going to be similar to the clutch accumulator that went recently on mine, not a warrantee!! That was 300 quid all in, so god knows what the coolant one will be from a dealer? Interestingly enough, i 'loose' coolant too! They have looked but as yet not found. Just hope its not the same issue as yours?

What i would do and i did when i had the sports design wheels on my Boxster corrode on the ally rim, was write a firm technical letter to Porsche GB. Quote a number of articles and the fact they have changed the part number 6 times therefore they are aware of an issue. That said why should you pay for something that is clearly a design flaw or production fault. If its a low milage beast too, you may stand a chance. They replaced my two rear wheels free of charge after one letter only. I talked about casting faults/manufacturing faults etc and as it only had 24000mls....... etc etc.
