Hi,

Does any one know which of the 996 models have a mechanical slip differential?

Is it the pre 2001 models or is it just the pre 2001 carrera 2 only?

Many thanks!

It was an optional extra on the 3.6 996 C2 (option code M220, I think). It was standard only on the "40 years anniversary" model.

I have it on my 1999 C2 coupe (3.4 liter), along with option # 222 "traction control". I seem to remember reading that 220 requires 222 and vice versa. Thought PSM replaced this system in the 3.6 cars.

There are only two that I know of. The 1999 had it available as an option, in 2004 only the 40th anniversary edition had it, it was not an option on anyother c2.

Thanks again,

so looking for a carrera 2 with lsd the only way to tell is option code 220

Can anyone confirm whether traction control meant you got code 220 as well as randlj suggests.

Cheers.

Thanks for the info, had a 1998 options list lying around have figured it out:

1. Mechanical Differential lock and traction control cost £985 UK back then

2. Traction Control (with Tiptronic S) £850

Looks like the options for that ran only in the 1998/1999 cars before PSM came in 2000 with the carrera 4.

So has anyone tried the difference between one with the mech diff and one without or with the computer diff instead. Would be interesting to see if any difference?

Really? So none of the "regular" 996s had a LSD unless optioned that way. I have a 2002 C2 with no indication of the LSD option, but it sure drives like a car with a LSD. Does Porsche use some other technology to simulate that sensation. I do not have any form of electronic traction control that I am aware of either.

I find this amazing and just wanted to confrim that I am reading this right.

Thanks.

Does any of your paperwork have the transmission model number? Should start with G96...

I'm not sure about other models...but I have the toggle switch on the dash that turns the PSM on and off. It alsways defaults to on. Since the options for the 99 always included both the codes of 220 and 222...wouldn't they have to have the toggle switch to turn the feature on/off? Maybe my approach to this is too simplistic??
