re Coding of Rear Control Unit

Recommended Posts

Question for toolpants or any other techie on the forum. Is it possible to recode the rear CU on a 987 (the one that sits under the drivers seat) I would like to change the country coding from ROW to UK/ Netherlands/ Gibraltar so that the tilt sensor and Battery backed up siren are enabled. I have retro fitted the wiring and the devices already.

Great ! Thanks for the info RFM.

For anyone else in a similar position to myself with an import 987/997 in the Uk that requires the tilt sensor and battery backed siren to be insurance compliant , i now have pretty much all the info to retro fit the missing devices. Not sure if this will work in the USA as I'm not fully aware of all the functions of the rear CU unit.

I hope this works. Don't know anyone who has tried, and I really can't ask the local mechanics I know as we do not have the tilt sensor/siren option in the US.

I wanted to do this on my 1997 years ago, as there is a retrofit kit for the 986. Of course there were no kits in the US as we do not have this in the US. But I could order it from Germany. My mechanic friend and I looked at the wiring diagrams and he thought I could get the kit to work on a US car, but I never tried. Back then I did not even know where the parts mounted, but the UK people have sent me pictures.

Have you already purchased the missing parts? And what about the loom. I was not able to find a retrofit kit for the 987 like there is for the 986. The 986 retrofit kit had a loom.

The wiring is fairly straight forward , only half a dozen wires for both items , so I purchased wire lengths from an automotive electrical supplier in the correct gauge and colours. The plugs were a real nightmare as Porsche don't officially sell replacement plugs , but I struck lucky in that the alarm siren is a VW part ! A bit of digging and it turns out its from the tourareg amongst other cars. Since theTourareg and Cayenne are a joint venture i looked at the VW parts listing , and sure enough the tilt senor is also the same unit. VW supply replacement plugs and repair pins , so i ordered the parts from VW and made up my own loom. The sensor and siren can be bought in the UK from the dealer , but not sure if it would work , I purchased my units from a car breakers. Loom is in place , just needs splicing in to the power , ground and connecting to the rear CU. I've contacted a local independant about the recoding of the rear CU and they are willing to help. I'm not entirely sure the rear CU will need recoding but i have a hunch that the siren and tilt sensor need to be activated via software rather than just working on their own. Looking inside the tilt sensor , its a complex device with 8 pins outs , though Porsche do not use all of them , so it can obviously do some fancy stuff. If the rear CU needs coding for the Uk/Netherlands/Gibraltar option , I'm not sure if this would affect the other operations required for the USA / Canada , this may be a problem for those in the USA. My car was imported from Germany and I live in the UK, so recoding to Netherlands/ Uk should not be an issue. I will update the forum as work progresses.

Success !! Took the car to the local OPC, they hooked up the PWIS unit and added the country code option for UK/ Netherlands/ Gibraltar/ Cyprus to the rear CU. Once the option had been loaded and selected , the additional items are now all working. The battery backed siren replaces the alarm horn , sounding when the alarm is triggered, but the horn still beeps if you try and lock the car with a door or trunk lid open. I tried to get this additional code input and CU configured at a local independant and to be honest I dont think their emulator has the ability to add country codes , only select or change those already in the CU. Porsche only charged half hour labour for the mod , so I'm very happy with the result. If there is anyone else out there with a LHD 997/ 987 living in the Uk , that wants or needs the battery backed siren and tilt sensor to be Uk insurance compliant , I can supply a loom and instructions at a good price !!

Hi Folks , I have a 2006 987 Boxster with the wet floor problem !!!!

I have removed carpets & dried them out , Cleared cabriolet drain holes , Purchased a new rear control unit from Porsche , Made what I believe the relevant coding changes using durum pro but still have a non working roof ???

The roof drive will engage if use the close roof in the activations screen but only one way close & not open !!!

Has anybody got a coding file or can mail me the coding for the car please ?

Many thanks & appreciate the help.

The module must be programmed with the entry "convertible roof not present" otherwise you get an indication on the dash as "communication problem convertible roof" This is because one and the same program is used for convertible 997, which operates according to a hydraulic-electrical system with supplementary module. However 987 convertible works independently and electrical-mechanical, the relays, 1 up and 1 down, and fuses are located in the fuse and relay holders near the drivers feet (LHD vehicle). I suspect, rather, an error in this fuse/relay system.
