K&N Air Intake System

Recommended Posts

You should do a search for K and N on this forum and on Rennlist. Without bad-mouthing any particular product...you'll find a lot said about the K and N....including some references to Porsche voiding warranty in some cases. Do some research before you buy one....and I'm serious....do some research.

FWIW, I installed an EVOM cool air intake.

Well I bought one of those kits a few weeks ago and finally installed it over last weekend. So far I'm happy. I really like the sound it makes. It is totally quiet like stock, but put your foot in it around 4,000 rpm and it makes this lovely sound, the sound is worth it! Performance wise, well I'm not a good judge here. The car was nuts fast before I put it on and SEEMS stronger now, I haven't dyno'd nor do I plan to, seat of the pants.....again I think it was worth it! Can't say 23 hp, but you can feel it.

Couple of things had me worried; everybody's check engine light complaints and water ingestion. I have also heard about rattles and poor fitting.

Take your time to install. I assembled the whole airbox in my house in the comfort of air conditioning (I live in the gateway to hell). Taking my sweet time. I got a real good understanding of how it mounts, why and with what modifications are needed. The instructions are a little confusing if you have never done this before! I suspect MANY if not all problems are related to a quick shoddy install. I'll bet many folks did not drill a hole in their car to mount it properly. If you don't, I can guarantee it will rattle, possibly rub on a pulley or even move. When I finally was putting it in the car, I must have put it in and taken it out 5 times to make sure everything lined up and was rigid. Once it is in the car, you will have to tighten the expando grommets or it will rattle and move (not stated in the instructions). The bracket that you have to drill a hole for is critical to it not moving. Also make sure that the air intake hose is properly centered in its receptacle on the engine lid, that will also rattle. USE the Drycharger that comes with the kit and I added NO additional oil to the filter!

I highly suggest you disconnect your battery WITHOUT the 9 volt battery gizmo, so the computer will clear (have radio code ready). I also suggest you clean the ICV and the MAF sensor and the throttle body..........your right there anyway and a cause of many CEL. I also changed my polyrib belt while all that was out (5 min deal). DON"T forget to turn the MAF sensor around and flip the plug (instructions cover this well)!

The car runs much better than before (ICV,MAF and TB cleaning) is tons smoother and idles like a new car. Probably NOT because of the cold air intake, but **** it sounds good! I'll probably get a ticket trying to hear the sweet sound.

It hasn't rained in a very long time in hell (or the gateway) so I'll have to update on the water ingestion. I did put a clean towel over the air cleaner, before I washed the car (engine lid closed) and the towel was soaked after washing, but the filter was dry, could possibly be an issue in heavy downpour.

Hope that helps, all in all I like it and would buy it again. Oh 300 miles and NO CEL yet!

Hello there....I ve also installed a kn 63-7000 kit in my 02 carrera cab.The car seems stronger,I like the sound,I ve done 3000km with the kit and had not any check lights or even instant hesitation...Everything works fine...Then I remap the ECU and the car became even more powerfull...However,the 23hp claim of the KN is fantasy...My car has porsche sport exhausts,kn induction and chipped ECU and I believe I ve gained about 15-20hp...

Update

After 500 miles, my dash turned into a Christmas tree. CEL's every day for a week. Disregard 1st post above. Unit now removed from car and all is good. Maybe it would work good for a track car...hmmm. Anybody wants this thing send me a PM with a reasonable offer..........other wise its Ebay next week. Way too much BS for a little noise. Funny how it took 500 miles to cause trouble, oh well, live and learn to trust Renntech.

I put a K&N kit on my car 3000 miles ago with no issues whatsoever. The kit fits perfectly & incorporates the factory air duct. The kit comes with a dry sock to slip over the filter which I just put on due to torrential rain yesterday. I doubt the 23 HP claim as it wouldnt show up on the dyno, but colder air with more volume into the engine will make extra horsepower, no question. The car sounds awesome above 4000 & the throttle response seems better. No loss on the low end & no adverse effects whatsoever in my case. No codes either. Im sold on the kit especially since I dont think $250 spent on any other mod would reap the same benefits.

I put k n cold air kit on my 99 C2. I had a cel after 500 miles. After 2 mafs I put the stock intake back on the car. Maybe it simply depends on the car. I'm baffled how some of you have no problems and some of us do. Oh well...... <_<

I ordered one of these today for my 03 C2. In the installation instructions, it says not to drive in harsh or inclement weather unless you return to the stock airbox... WTF?!?!?! Anyone had any problems in the rain with a K&N on a 996? I typically drive an SUV when i know the bad weather is coming, but would hate to think that the car wash or a sudden downpour will leave me stranded!

My Porsche was built 1998 so does the K&N fit too or not?

as long as your car is a 996 version of the 996 you're fine.......however these intakes werernt desigined for the 3.4L engine your car has and the 23 horsepower gain is not overall when you look at the dyno chart the gains some in the middle of the chart. also k&N doesnt even list the part anymore.....and finally i have one installed and im seriously considering removing it due to CEL,, im a on my second mass air sensor since i installed it.

Great advice to assemble in the house! I took my time for once, and did the main assembly well before taking anything out of the car.

First drive- power is much smoother in the low end. Used to feel like the car came alive at about 4000 rpm, now is "hot" all the way from take off to high end shift! Don't know if there is more power as the KN folks say there should be, but the sound is more aggressive, and the delivery is better. Will see about those CELs...

sfarris, I have had no problems whatsoever in torrential rain. The kit comes with a dry sock to slip over the filter. If your filter does not have one, you can get it from K&N.

Nope, i got the sock. It does look way exposed there, glad to know you are running it with no trouble!

How much did you pay for the K&N Filter?

And how often do you clean the filter?

Was it difficult to install?

Install was not difficult, but you have to be prepared to drill holes in your car. Just a couple. Do the main assembly indoors, it is much easier.

Price- i paid 100$ on ebay, but they are typically about $250 if memory serves.

I haven't had mine long enough to clean it, but on past vehicles, Diesel pickups and such, it was about 20K miles. Not much to the cleaning, either.

water issues? Can any extensive damage occur...or is this just a "stall" issue? I put on my K+N a few thousand miles ago and no issues..except once I took it to the car wash and didn't turn off the engine and it stalled on me. But started fine after wash ended. If this water issue can wreck my 996 i'm taking it off!

I experienced a CEL several weeks after install. Took Porsche to dealer they stated CEL was due to a crack in Motor oil filler hose (black flexible one, that has to moved during install). Dealer said this is something that they have been seeing lately. It was replaced everything is now good to go.

I love the K&N... Ran a Chin Event right before Christmas (Sebring) & my Turbo friends kept asking what I did to the Porsche especially coming out of the turns. Once I hit 3500-4000 it pulled like never before!!!!
