How can I identify what MAF sensor type?

Recommended Posts

I could use some help from you all.

I'm trying to replace MAF sensor in my car (2001 Boxster S) as it has been identified as the problem.

When I tried to purchase the MAF sensor though, I found out that there are 2 types of MAF sensor for my car.

One for E/accelerater, the other for 'without' E/accelerator.

Can you help me identify the MAF sensor type so that I can purchase the right sensor?

Thanks!!

Check you old sensor part number. If is 996.606.124.00 and your car was manufactured prior to January 31, 2000 then you can use the 996.606.125.01 but it will require your DME to be re-programmed for the new style sensor.

Thanks a lot!

I confirmed that the part number on the old MAF is indeed 996.606.124.00

I guess I will have to call the porsche dealer service for a re-programing cost. Hope it's not much.

Don't assume you need reprogramming.

I have an '01 S and I didn't. It is only early '00s as I read the charts.

Read my write up

down at the bottom there is a table cross referencing Porsche-branded part numbers with Bosch part numbers. Absolutely no reason to pay for Porsche painting their part number on what is absolutely the same part when bought from Bosch. Replacing the MAF is something you can do yourself. Took me 15 minutes and I had never even opened the engine cover on a Boxster before. Though be aware that often problems that seem MAF related are in fact caused by other problems. But rear the linked article.

We covered this in detail 3 years ago.

I do not know for sure why you have 996 606 124 00 as that sensor was not put into cars made after January 31, 2000, and you have a 2001.

I guess during the life of your car the sensor was replaced and "backdated" to the sensor you now have due to the idle issue reported here.

996 606 124 00 is no longer sold as a Boxster part number. But when I check PET it is still listed for a 1999-2001 C4 and the turbo, so you should be able to buy it from Porsche. If you search around I bet you can find it in the aftermarket for less. I have in my notes that the Bosch part number is 0 280 218 009. You can confirm the Bosch number because it is on your sensor
