Side skirts- how do they mount?

Recommended Posts

I am enamored with the TA and other sideskirts. Can someone tell me where they mount? Do they just tape on over the bodywork?

Sorry for the unreasonably dumb question!

Umm... they go on the sides. HAHA *bad joke*

Not a dumb question at all, however... and I know the feeling. Funny to see this question now. I dropped off my car this morning to have some TA Sport skirts installed this week... should be painted and installed near Thursday.

Porsche has a side skirt mounting harware kit that works great, but it's (not surprisingly) expensive from a dealer at around $120, and usually must be ordered. I can get you a part # if you need it.

Mounting is basically (depending on the skirts) 6 screws and some spring clips that attach to the bottom rail of the frame located just under the rocker panel on either side of the car. My car is an '03 Boxster S that has rear mudflaps that must be removed to even test-fit the rockers... not sure if earlier/other models have them as well.

Many people use 3M automotive body tape or (my last choice) epoxy glue to mount them to the sides of the car, and in the case of the TA Sport skirts, it's appropriate since the rear of each skirt wraps up the rear quarter panel behind the doors to follow the doorline. With poly skirts (like the Porsche Aerokit I and II) they also supply a thin, double-sided foam seal that runs the length of the contact points against the car to keep small pebbles, water, dirt, and corrosion out from behind the covered area.

Just installed the AerokitII skirts 2 weeks ago. Pretty easy, the bottom part uses supplied clips and wide headed screws, that snap on to the underside lip. The top portion uses 2 sided tape that you start in the middle and pull the protective film off when on the car, do not pull the tape off until you have the side skirts fastemed at the bottom and properly aligned. The front portion of the wheel well has a push pin you remove then install it through the hole in the side skirt. The rear section of the side skirt that is under the car and in the wheel well uses the screws from the removed fender small front flared skit/flap.The tricky part is aligning the clips with the holes on the bottom of the skirt while snapping onto the body lip.

If I am not mistaken the AeroKitI skirts uses epoxy in place of the 2 sided tape. I prefer the AerokitII for the looks. There is a TSB for the installtion on the Boxster, which pretty much is the same for the Carrera, you just need to omit a few steps.

If you do a search there are lots of really useful topics on this.

Well worth reading about all the experiences I think.

I recently refitted mine and I think this is the optimal way:

I also thoroughly resprayed and wax coated all the fixings for the sill bottom and coated all the screws with POR15.

They're just how I want them now!

Takes time though.
