Rear end rumble and oil leak

Recommended Posts

I'm performing the 60,000 mile service on my 99 Carerra and there is oil leaking from aroud the left rear axle seal. At about 57,000 miles, I started to notice a noise (slight rumble) coming from the driverside, at the back of the car, around the wheel / transmission / drivetrain area. The noise has been slightly louder prior to putting the car on jacks and discovering the leak.

Are there any known problems with the axle seal, and how difficult is it to change the axle seal, or shouuld I be looking at possible other problems?

There have been no other problems such as shifting.

Help is always appreciated.

The axle bearing on the trans side may be worn out, thus making the seal wear. Rumbling noise can be indicitive of large bearing play due to wear.

Do you know if the bearing caqn be replaced with the transmission/differential in the vehicle? Is this typical problem?
