I am going to buy the 2001 911 Carrera 4, since the vibrating (make me feel the back of the car vib left, right, left) of the engine is kind big, I want to send to a trusted tech to look at.

should i send to porsche dealer or this place who just do the porsche (any in VA, heard of them?)

Founded in November 1991, Autobahn Services Inc. is an independent Porsche® facility ....

I would like to let dealer to do the PPI, but something, dealer service people may know nothing, but reading the code.

thanks

I would take it to AutoSportsystems Group (ASG) in Fairfax. I have been using them since 1996 for both air cooled and watercooled 911's. Taylor and Geoff have done all of the work on my 996 since 2001.

Whatever you do, don't go to Peter at Performance Imports in Atlanta. They had my car for a few days (!) to do the PPI and eventually gave me the thumbs up to buy. When it came time to see what they actually checked (I was hoping for some sort of a semi-professional report for the warm and fuzzy), boss Peter sent me an email with horrendous misspellings that amounted to what I felt was a total blow-off. Who knows if they actually gave the car a thorough PPI before I bought. I'm just glad the car hasn't blown up yet.

I replied to the email telling him what I thought, and never heard back (that was 6 months ago). I know you're no where near Atlanta, but I felt like venting.

Thats the same guy who quoted me $1100 to install PSS9s + align but no corner balance. He's been here (Atlanta) for a long time. Most of the time he has not had any competition except for the 2 local stealers and a handful of euro generalists. In the past 5 years or so there have been 2-3 speed shops that opened up in the Braselton / Road Atlanta area. They are charging top prices too (ie $1200 for an alternator replacement). Call me naive (wrong) and a tightwad (right) but the "porsche tax" to get anything done to your car in this town always drives me crazy. I wish I were in So. Cal. with all the speed shops there and the warehouse-style auto parts and service places (like a Costco but for autos) that will install PSS9s for $400, etc.

Vette67,

I'm in Southern California and their are some real bloodsuckers out here too. Thanks to this site I'm able to daignose problems before hand. Then I buy the parts and have my mechanic do the work and just charge me labor (which is very reasonable.)

Here is example of the "Porsche tax" you spoke of. A very popular independant here charges outrageous prices. I took my car to him once for an oil change and he came back with a list of things that needed to be "done" to my car. New clutch (my clutch is old but just fine) new tires (he would only use Perrelli's, God bless him).. Spark plug tubes and Cam cover reseal (didn't need it then and only one side had some weeping) There were a few other things as well. All tolled he wanted about $4k to "Get my car back to form"

What an ***...

I have a doctor friend who has two Turbos, a 993 and a 996. He goes to this guy and never blinks at the price. He told me that he needed new front brakes with rotors for the 996. His trusty mechanic told him it would be $1200!!!!! $1200 bucks for brakes? Please! :o

I sent my friend a parts list and showed him that all parts came to about $600. Thats with tax and shipping. All Porsche OEM. I said "Do you realize this jerk is going to charge you $600 in labor to do your brakes?" (Labor on brakes is a bout a 2 hour job as we know)

So you have to be careful out here as well!

Sorry to go on such a tangent but these kind of jerks prey on ignorant Porsche owners. Really makes me mad!!!

Sorry again for the rant..

Thanks for the sanity check, philipj. Guess there are weasels everywhere.

I was thinking that you guys have a lot more porsche shops and tuners out there so natural competition would keep prices more reasonable. Like have you read the post, its either on here or on rennlist, about the guys who got their PSS9s and I think even a spoiler installed at one of your "tuner warehouses"? It was dirt cheap. I guess this place does mostly rice-burners, but they were excited to get to work on the porsches and did a real good job. Im thinking they charged like $400. Im really going to have to look up that post again!

Hi vette67, just have one question, if I did PPI with the Performance Auto Shop, and later on, the part that they inspected was broken.

Are they responsible for it? will they fix it?

I buy the car, because they did PPI and said it was all good.

thanks

I dont know. Did they guarantee anything?

You were talking about getting an aftermarket warranty. If you do, then that will cover you (be sure to read the fine print). Im no expert on PPI's because I did not get one and I was very sorry afterwards... $2500 worth of unexpected repairs. That's why I will always get a PPI in future. Also, I did not buy a warranty. I have to learn everything the hard way!
