NAVTEQ Map CE Version Update?

Recommended Posts

I've read and ever my dealer told me to contact NAVTEQ for an update to the 04 Cayenne PCM NAV Maps.. Has anyone done this?? If so, what did you have to do? I called NAVTEQ and they said they didn't have such a thing?? Pardon me if stranding us poor CD version owners like that is a bit whack... :censored:

begs to be hacked or something.. anyone? Beuhler? :soapbox::)

I'm ready to pay for an update... just make one available.. seems stupid to have to upgrade to DVD at $3000+ installed just to be able to get a new map update.. My Gateway 500 and ipod negates my DVD needs.. anyway...

HELP!

btw,

:renntech:

Short answer: no. Not for CDs, ever again. Sorry.

Long answer:

The map database they produce has been migrated to a DVD standard (more maps fit on 1 optical disk, so no swapping out). As such, the database is HUGE and cannot be broken back down into regions without the original code or someone with a serious dedication to a reverse engineering project (personally, I'd estimate 500 hours of work to rip it up and relink it, and that's possibly way underestimated).

I was working on this for about a month before I decided it just seriously wasn't worth it, even as a hobby. I'm looking into the PCM swap now.

Good news is, if you do the PCM swap, you can sell your old one to recoup some of the cost of the new one.

Ok, so how much is the PCM upgrade going to set you back? I'm thinking it might be significantly cheaper and better overall to get access to the AV button/video display mode of the PCM and broadcast from an external GPS like a tomtom or handheld PC. The updates would then be consistent and far cheaper.. If you mounted it right you could surf the web on it too..

Just my .02,

- Andrew

As an update, the PCM upgrade cost is insane. I have estimated closer to $4500 including the DVD mount under the seat, the swapping and reprogramming of PCMs, and the work involved. However, I'll end up with a perfectly working used CD based PCM, which could easily be resold for $1000.

Needless to say, I'm just going to wait for this summer to see how the Mobridge Video comes out. I already have a Mobridge Audio installed now, but I'd easily buy the video if the price is low enough to do a VGA output (or even RCA).

Getting an update is like chasing your tail. Porsche tells you call Navteq, and then Navteq turns it around and says to call Porsche. I hate them both. There's got to be an update out there somewhere, but just try to find it.

I got an answer from Navteq pretty easy: "no, will never be any further updates for CD based maps for Porsche."

There are people on the Internet that say send me your PCM and I will mod it for AV input.. $495 + Shipping + Removal and Replacement into car... umm.. Anyone have an idea what this mod is? Anyone want to try a DIY?? :)
