Cabriolet top side flap

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My 996 has been flawless for the past year, but now I have a problem with the convertible top. It is currently stuck in the down position because the passenger side flap does not go down. Anyone ever experience this, and what should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance!!

John Jones

Check your owners manual. There is at tool for emergency operation that you'll need to use to manually operate the flap and put it into the full down position. After that the cabtop should be able to be closed using the switch as normally unless you have other problems.

John, those side flaps do operate on a linear (ball) screw and have to be regreased to work properly. I had the same problem, and if you remove the rear carpet cover from behind the back seats (2 phillip screws), use a flashlight and you will see the rotating parts screw like lifter. What I had to do is use a small foam brush and high temp grease applied to the screw, and situation fixed.

This forum ROCKS!!!!

Good idea to put it on a yearly preventative maintenance list :)

I never finally replied to this thread because I never got around to truly fixing the problem until this year, I just threw the hardtop on and put off the resolution. I had to use the tool that PTEC described above, and once I manually operated it up and down once, that took care of the problem. Next I will regrease the screw as Izzy suggested, don't want this to happen again.
