964 VIN Puzzle

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I tried using Scouser's VIN decoding for a 1991 964 carrera 2 coupe that I am considering purchasing. The VIN # is WPOZZZ96ZMS450906. When I had this VIN decoded using Scouser's decoder, it states that the car is a cabriolet and not a coupe. Does the European model have a different designation for the body type compared to the USA model? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The third symbol is the number 0, not the letter O.

I believe you are wrong. The first three letters of the VIN identify the manufacturer and all others that I can easily identify are letters - not numbers.

WBA = BMW

WVW - Volkswagen

WPO = Porsche

WFO = Ford

It's very easy to confuse the O and 0, particularly on the VIL label as it's printed quite small an indistinct.

Dave

Sorry, Dave in this case you are wrong - Porsche's World Manufacturer Identifier (or WMI code) is WP0 (that is a zero).

Thank you Loren. On the basis that you have access to some official documentation to which you refer I am happy to accept your confirmation.

Dave
