Very strange indeed.

Cayennes do strange things when the battery is going bad - that could be your problem. I doesn't sound like a battery problem, but could be. Are you still on the original battery?

Maybe there's something else that has gone bad...

I agree it sounds like it could be battery related. Sometimes when the battery gets low or the voltage is unsteady, the computer that controls all that stuff gets confused. Try disconnecting your battery for 5 or 10 minutes (make sure you have the radio code), then reconnect it and make sure the cables are snug on the battery.

I had a problem with my Boxster where every time I unlocked the doors, the front trunk would open. Doing that fixed it. More recently, my driver's window would roll halfway down every time I shut the door. Again, the same procedure fixed it. BTW, I'm still on the same battery.

Unlock the car and enter, close the door. Insert key but do not turn. Wait 30 seconds. Remove key, lock car unlock and test.

I find this works for a number of situations including but not limited to

1 - Bose amp not producing sound

2 - Nav boot issues, like not being able to read the CD (03/04/05)

3 - Apparent lost comfort settings

My 2004 Cayenne started to get stuck in park and your procedure above worked! Here is the goofy part - I owned the car over 5 years and did not want to take it to the dealer and it started to get stuck in park. The shop I like in Laguna did not know how to fix it so they replaced the stop light switch 1st, then it got stuck again, they replaced the selenoid 2nd, it got stuck again, they replaced the whole hand / gear shift 3rd, it got stuck again, a guy with his own porsche 911 in the shop just happened to be there that day and said a button next to the ignition switch allowed the car to get out of park and it worked for 4 weeks until today. I tried to push that button, turn the ignition at the same time and turn the steering wheel to get it out of park and it did not work.

Your procedure above made it work and I want to thank you a bunch

Now the car is stick in park again, any idea if replacing the battery would fix this?

It does sound a lot like that but it could also be that the transmission control unit may be bad. I am on my 4th, last changed when they changed my transmission to an 05 transmission under warranty

Some of the early ones were flaky

You were right about the Transmission control unit being the culprit,, they figured it out when they saw the letter on the console behind the sterringwheel became back lit as apposed to the letter (P or N or R or D or M1 etc.) bieng that orange color - the shop insists it is not the battery

Now they said a "relay" or electric box was broken and not letting the key out of the ignition - hopefully picking the car up tomorrow, driving an old mercedes loaner for now
