2003 996 C2 Alternator Bearing

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Post number one, 3 weeks into 911 ownership!

I've a 84,000 mile C2, which at tick-over gives out a very slight bearing rumble, turned out to be the alternator bearing. With the belt removed, there's obvious play in the pulley - it moves in and out by 1mm or so with a slight 'clunk'. The noise is only there at tick-over, and when revved above 1000rpm it disappears.

The voltage is good at 14V with the engine running, and the temp sits at 82 all the time.

Does anyone know if this is something that should be fixed immediately, or is it ok to drive as long as the sound doesn't get worse? Also, what do people recommend - remanufactured or new from Porsche?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Haig

I had the same issue on my 2000 model with 90k miles. Alternator charged okay but bearing was howling. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't promise how long it would last. I didn't want to end up on the side of the road so I just changed it out. Took me about 4 hours of wrangling to work it out. Got a Bosch reman unit from Vertex Auto for 250.
