Oil Filter and Front Hood Latch

Recommended Posts

Two questions which I haven't found anything through the search for.

First, is there an alternate brand of oil filter that porsche sells under? Like GM is AC Delco and Dodge is Mopar and I think Ford is Motorcraft. If not, what brands would any of you recommend?

Second, my front trunk, when I pop the hood, it doesn't seem to pop up much and I struggle to get my fingers underneath it to lift it up a little so I can unlatch it and open it. I originally thought it was missing a spring or something was broke, but it kind of looks like this is how it is designed. Is that how it is designed, or is there something wrong with my latch?

Thanks!

If I'm not mistaking, Mahle is the rand that Porsche uses as OEM. I know WIX make one. Other then those I couldn't tell you.

Your front deck lid is normal, considering mine is the same way. Just kinda lift with fingertips of one hand and slide the other to release the latch.

I think the factory OEM was Hengst. I know that they can be had via OEM channels as opposed to dealer sources for less. I personally use a K&N version, which is a very high quality unit in terms of construction. I've done no scientific testing as to filter efficiency, but it passes the "no blown engines" test after 15K miles, for what that's worth.

As to the hood opening gap, I've had the same experience. I've examined the latching mechanism and hood alignment and have come to the conclusion that on some days (possibly due to temperature and hood expansion/contraction) the latch "loop" that extends down into the "catch" mechanism, binds ever so slightly which results in a limited amount of "pop up" clearance. I've decided that this is a feature, and with the trouble associated with trying to re-align it, that it isn't worth fixing, and could possibly end up worse than it is, which really isn't that bad.

cheers,

You'll find that many of us have had to replace the latch - I seem to recall a price of around $165 - at least it is a really simple repair. It is a combination hood latch (metal) and sensor (plastic) and in many cases the plastic simply fails after awhile and things go south from there. I would say that if yours is more than 7 years old you're ahead of the game. Try a couple drops of oil and be gentle!!!

And if you talk to Jake Raby at Flat 6, he sells a filter adapter so you can switch over to a spin on- which I did.

That's the direction I'm going, as well; soon as the Chicago winter is over and I can work in the garage again!

Also, when I close my front trunk, the hood never latched good. I always have to push down on it to get it fully latched. Is this common to others?

Thanks!

Adjusting Hood Latch Mechanism

Loren,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Haven't been able to try it yet, but it looks like exactly what I was looking for. My car was just in the shop recently and the mechanic and body repair man both looked at the latch and were convinced there wasn't even a spring involved with the latch.

Again, thanks!

- Michael
