996 starting problems

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm having a starting problem with my 1998 996. It got progressively worse over a couple of days and appeared to only be a hot start issue. The car has been sitting idle for a couple of months with the occasional trickle charge of the battery. The road assist service guy tested the battery and said it was fine - it cranks strongly. My mechanic suggested testing the fuel pump by connecting the battery to it. It pumps strongly but I'm unsure if it is pumping when I'm trying to start it. I've disconnected the main fuel line in the engine bay and no fuel is coming out of it when the pump is tested. I've checked all of the fuses and they are fine. This leaves me with two options that I need advice on:

1. The fuel filter is blocked - could the tank have developed some condensation sitting for so long?

2. The computer is not initiating ignition - I have heard that it won't turn on under 12 volts of charge.

Anyone got any ideas? I'd much rather fix this at home than have it towed to the dealer - they are just too stupid and expensive.

Cheers

David
