Thanks to all that offered suggestions for this problem.

It turned out to be the battery. While it had a good charge it apparently did have a bad cell. Also, for anyone else that has a similar problem, when I attempted a jump start it pushed the volts up to 13.5, but this didn't allow me to start the car.

Bought a new Bosch battery at Pep Boys. Online coupon for $10 off made it $79.99.

Thanks again!

I have a similar problem with my new 02 996 cab. Thing is, most of the time it starts. However, once in a while it takes a few turns of the key. Symptoms are otherwise identical. Battery was apparently replaced by the dealer when they got the car (i picked it up 1.5 weeks ago). I was thinking starter switch, but I dont get the sticky key symptom most do. I have to double check battery levels, but I think it's just above 12 when I turn it to the on position.

Recent work on the car was Clutch, RMS, IMS, Front Pads and Oil Change (all by seller before I got it.. done at a shop by them).

Today took like 10-15 tries to start this morning, usually 2-3 is the max, but starts first try more times than not.

So I just tried a jump with no change. The volt meter moved to 13.5 13.7 with the other car running, but my car didn't make a sound. Could it still be the battery or is there another place I should look?

I'm itching to see what happens here. I've got a 2001 C4 Cabriolet (tiptronic, no nav system). Every once in a while I get the same symptom - insert the key, interior & dash lights behave correctly. But when I try to start it, nothing happens. No sound. The lights don't dim so I know nothing is happening that draws much current. I've seen this happen repeatedly and then go away for months. When it was happening I tried cycling the door locks/alarm, pulling the emergency brake, pressing on the brake and much more but nothing work. It just seems random.

Love to hear if anyone else has had the same experience. Love to hear if anyone has fixed it.

Bill
