996 Toddler Car Seat Options for Back Seat

Recommended Posts

Which forward facing toddler car seat fits in the back seat of the 996 convertible? My son is 1 1/2 years old, weighs 30 pounds and is 31 inches tall. I am looking a toddler car seat (not a booster car seat) that has worked for other 996 owners. I would appreciate knowing the brand name and the specific model name/number, please. The Porsche branded car seat is not an option since we are only going to use this car seat for a couple of months.

I have read all the postings about car seats fitting in the back seat of the 996. The posting info about the Recardo Vivo Light (booster seat) fitting older kids (+3 years) was great. Unfortunately, my son is too young for this option...based on the U.S. car seat safety reglations.

Any help would be fantastic!

Tricia

P.S. We are living abroad. I am heading back to drive our car soon...hopefully with my son in the back seat. But we don't currently have access to our 996 to try various car seats in the back seat.

I've used a Britax Marathon baby seat in the back seat of my 996. It just barely fit, i removed the rear seat cushion and seat back and it fit a little better. To secure it, i used the regular 3 point seat belt and there is actually a couple of LATCH points on the back shelf underneath the carpeting to hook into (one for each side) - I am not sure if the cabriolet has the Latch points. The front seat has to be moved really far foward, almost all the way in order for this to work.

Britax and Recaro seats work. I have a 996 C4S (coupe) and have successfully put a Britax Boulevard and a Recaro Young Sport in the back. We have both seats (use the other one in the DD) but ended up keeping the Young Sport in the 911 because:

i) the Britax hits the C-pillar on its left upper edge. It still fits fine but I juet didn't like it rubbing on the panel. Could be more or less clearance in a cab though

ii) the head restraint on the Recaro is better for spirited driving (ie the side to side support for the kids head really restrains lateral movement in the Recaro)

iii) The Recaro gives the kid perhaps 0.5" more clearance to the front passenger seat (essentially the passenger can position the seat slightly further back)

Other things worth noting:

- The Recaro looks alot more compact in the store but it doesn't make a huge difference as you would think because the Britax base is narrow.

- It helps to take out the rear seat back (adds 0.5-1" of additional distance to the back of the passenger seat), but does not do anything to take the seat bottoms out.

- If a passenger is going to be along as well, my guess is they need to be 5' 6" or shorter. Otherwise they will be pretty cramped to give the kid sufficient room
