top "idiot" light doesn't come on

Recommended Posts

'98 US model Boxster

My saga continues. My top stopped in the down position. After replacing the control module last night (due to pin 18 being broken off) my top still doesn't operate.

My Park Brake light is on, but no matter what Situation I simulate, my top"unsafe" light does not come on. Where does it get it's signal from? The switch on the windshield?

Right now:

1. Relay doesn't "click" when switch is activated"

2. Park brake light is "on" only when parking brake is applied.

3. Windows "drop" when switch is unlatched".

4. clamshell and top rigging have been verified.

As I said before, I just moved across country, and my Bentley manual and tools are in storage. I appreciate your input. I'm going bonkers though, and I just might have to unpack to get at my stuff and then repack.

Thanks for the help.

Don't have the solution, Marice will pipe in with the definitive but,

the #18 pin mat have nothing to do with it in that it or #15 pin being decommissioned in a certain hack and if it were working before...how would the pin up & dissapear. revesing the hack might make you park stay on.

You wouldn't necessarily feel the relay, they are tinny little sugar cubes in that big double relay box.

The top only worked as it was supposed to previously. The brake had to be on. the top wouldn't move if the car were moving. I don't htink the hack had been done. I might have broken the pin off when I pulled the relay to troubleshoot.

There are 2 more relays (if my memory is better than my writing) in the trunk relay tray. I think there the 2, third from the back. They do the heavy lifting. Try popping them out and smack them on the ground a couple times, loosen them up. You can put your finger or ear to those and easily feel or hear them click...which don'st mean you still don't have a dirty contact there.

Got a DMM?

I do have a DMM. Where is the relay tray in the trunk? What do you mean by heavy lifting?

Problem solved. Replaced relay to take care of broken pin 18. Didn't fix problem. Pulled latch switch on windscreen, found one contact broken at solder joint on pin. It had a cold solder joint, so just heated it up, solder flowed around pin, top fixed.

I still love my Boxster.
