Steering rack replacement.

Ive been chasing a very slight noise on the front of my 01 S for a while. I finally found it to be the near side track rod arm ball joint after replacing wishbone bushes, drop links, etc. Anyhow, the noise is gone but I still have a knocking at low speed through the steering wheel. I've traced this to the steering rack. If I jack the car up so the wheel is just on the floor I can wobble the steering wheel and feel a knocking in the rack on the off side. I can also hear it from the same location.

Looking at it, as long as I can get to the UJ from inside the bonnet then it looks easy to replace. Anyone done it? Is access to the UJ possible from under the bonnet?

Is this an unusual failure as Ive never had one go on any car Ive ever owned and if Im honest, Im a little disapointed that this has happened on a car with 50K miles and full porsche service history! I bet its not covered under the warranty I have either :angry:
