hard thumping/clicking noise in right rear at slow speed/turning

Recommended Posts

I have a 2004 Cayenne S with 45K miles. A few days ago, I noticed a thumping/clicking noise coming from the right rear. I sounds and kind of feels like I have a flat tire--but not so simple. It only happens at slow speeds (very slow) and I believe mostly when making slow turns.

I was thinking this is a bad CV joint, but I called my mechanic this morning and he was saying it sounds like the drive shaft--saying he has replaced so many of them on Cayennes.

Any ideas? Other symptoms/problems? Worried about costs....Guess I should not put this off???

Thank you very much for the help.

Michael

Michael,

Have you got your Cayenne to your mechanic or a dealer? Sounds like a CV joint to me. Interested to know the outcome of the repair.

All the best,

Bill

Hi Bill,

I took it to the mechanic. They replaced the drive shaft. And, from what I understood--the CV joint as well.

Problem was---that it 'pretty much' fixed it, but it still happened a bit. Less...but still some.

They drove it around with me after I took it back.

They noted that my tires were pretty worn. They said the noise seems to be coming from the transfer case.

And, they suggested that I change the tires to new ones.

It all sounded a bit strage to me, but I know these guys pretty well.

Anyhow, put new tires on about 2 hours ago and the noise seems to be gone....at least so far.

They said that the transfer case 'stuff' is really sensitive to the tires having equal wear, etc.

Michael
