Opening Top with Rocker Switch?

Recommended Posts

Just bought a 1999 911 C2 Cab.

When I bought it it had the hard top on.

1) Removed the hard top

2) I can open or close the top by inserting the key into the drivers side door and holding to one side

3) I can't open the top from the inside - here's what I'm doing

a) insert key / turn engine on

B) hand break is engaged

c) press and hold the rocker switch to open or close

d) The "convertible top light" on the dashboard - flashes... it doesn't go on and doesn't even flash in a consistant manner. The top won't open or close.

Any ideas or should I call a dealer?

Thanks in advance,

Sean

Does the red light on your instrument panel illuminate when you engage the brake? If not, then it is a common prob (had mine fixed recently). There is a small microswitch that is triggered when you engage the brake and that illuminates the PARK on the instument panel when engaged and the top needs that to happen for it to open prperly.

Troubleshoot this first. After that, threre are a couple other options.

This is a common problem with the Boxster. Did not know the 996 had the same issue. Start the car and pull up on the lever. If the warning light does not come on then it is the switch.

There is a $5 switch on the brake lever that needs to be replaced. A better switch has come out. Have to remove the center console like you were going to do a B&M install.

To get you going pull up and down on the lever a bunch of times and you might improve the electrical contact.

Tried pulling up and down on the lever several times with no luck..... Since I'm a newbie, any detailed instructions you could provide on how to go about getting and then installing the switch would be really appreciated. THanks!

The switch takes a minute to replace - once you have removed the center console. B&M has good instructions on how to remove the console - it is just 7 screws. Loren may have the instruction on this site. If not someone will give you a link or email them. The link I have is old and not working.
