It is a story for the ages.

Wiedeking helped lead Porsche out of possible bankruptcy in the early '90s and built it into the most profitable auto manufacturer in the world. In a different world had macroeconomic factors gone his way, Porsche could have taken control of VW allowing them to continue to focus on building high performance cars without worry about upcoming corporate fuel economy regulations (with millions of fuel efficient VWs lowering their corporate fuel economy rating). He also saw potential for improving VW into a dominating brand by instilling what Porsche has learned about improving quality and reliability into VW.

Lets hope more Porsche qualities get pumped into VW rather than the other way around now.

Weidking is a good engineer and did a marvellous job of turning the company around - and was rewarded more than generously! I think he just took things one step too far and got tied up in family politics, and the timing caught him (and everyone else) out.

does this news mean vw will start factory filling the wrong type of coolant into the porsche 3.8 engines? :-) Sorry, 1980's wasserboxer reference. Couldn't resist myself.
