flashing your own software

Recommended Posts

I'm considering having the ability to be able to load my own program to my DME. (This is because I have a custom program to run the 3.6 and If I were to lose it I would be stuck.) The tuner agreed to give me the sofware but said I would need a "Flash Cable" that would cost $400. What is a flash cable and how much do they really cost? I don't trust this jerk..

Thanks.

Probably a OBD2 || USB cable. The cables for these kind of setups are always the expensive bit. I have the VAGCOM [yes, I know] Ross-tech setup for my Audi, and the same applies - the software is free; the cable was costly piece.

Is this tuner giving you your files as well? Are you planning on manipulating them, or just archiving them for safekeeping?

Sounds like a nice chunk of change of course, but what are your engine software files worth to you?

If you couldn't source them from anywhere else and would require a retune for any reason, I think that is several hours worth of dyno and tuning time, which would be more than $400. I'd pay it.

What software is he using? Mine is FVD and they did the tuning with modified maps, and requires there cable to work with there software. The price does not seem to bad if it does what you need it to do and are they local to you would be a plus.
