Shifter Problem

Recommended Posts

My husband changed the transmission oil on my 2003 Boxster S at the 90,000 mile mark as the book advises. The first time I took the car out to go to work the shifting was very sloppy and after getting into the forward gears one time at the next stop I couldn't put the car into any gear but reverse.

After getting the car home my husband took off the belly pan and mounts and looked all around the transmission to see if anything was amiss and everything seemed to be fine. He then took the center console out and found $9 worth of change lodged in the shifter compartment (we are the second owners - I used the ashtray once to put change in it). He cleaned out the compartment and the car will now shift into reverse, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th but there's no way that it will go into 5th gear. I got it into 6th twice. What could the problem be? Is something bent and what would we have to replace?

Thank in advance for any help you can provide.
