Installing M97 3.8 Harmonic Damper?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any info regarding making the 3.8 harmonic damper work with an M96 3.6 engine? Best I can tell, the damper simply installs behind the pulley, which is the same part # as the rest of these motors, so unless I'm missing something, the 3.8 must have a completely different accessory belt alignment to compensate for the main pulley being farther away from the engine?

Is anyone making an aftermarket damped pulley to work with the rest of these motors?

Well I have just ordered the RSS 3.8 underdrive pulley, with integral damper. So we'll see if this fits on a 3.6 motor or not, and what modifications are needed, if any.

Did you order the longer bolt too? I think the bolt is longer on the 3.8.

Assuming the pulley fits without issues, I'll order the correct bolt and washer, I think both are different, and I know the bolt is longer.

I'm sorry I didn't clarify previously, this is the underdrive pulley, from RSS, designed for the M97 3.8. As shown, once you give the boss a haircut, and use the longer bolt, it fits great. I would like to think the addition of harmonic damping is a good thing for all of these motors.

OK I have to ask this. Why? Do you think that this will improve the performance, longevity or something on a 3.4 or 3.6?

If it adds a vibration dampener (lacking in the OEM due to internal balancing), it would help prevent harmonics that can cause rotating part failures.

What was the final thoughts on this?

Thanks

While debate rages on concerning the use of single mass vs. dual mass flywheels on these engines, even though Porsche released a tech brief to their dealers some time ago advising against their use, the jury remains still out on the significance adding a dampening unit on the other end of the crank.  While it cannot hurt, I'm not sure anyone has demonstrated to what level it helps
