The only manual I know of is "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion" by Adrian Streather. It isn't strictly devoted to maintenance. It is a sort of "super" owner's manual with explanations of the various systems in the car noting the changes to the systems as the 996 evolved. As far as DIY maintenance goes, there is a 70+ page DIY chapter in addition to maintenance information throughout the system chapters. There is also information on option codes, CEL diagnostic codes, production runs, etc.

Thanks Bill. I have a copy of "The Essential Companion" which I think is great reading. I also have all-data and a U.K. manual but all the Boxster fans keep referring to their "Bentley's" and I wanted one too.

Pelican Parts have a special on the factory workshop manuals http://www.pelicanpa..._manual_pg2.htm slightly more than Bentley :) but with a lot more info

Yup, I bought a lot of excess inventory from Porsche. Retail is $2100! The manuals take up 3 boxes and weigh more than 75 lbs! At $399, it's a pretty darn good deal, and the price will be going up as we start to run out of them.

I'm also coming out with a 996 book later on this year or next. I anticipate Bentley will be supporting the 996 market too, but I haven't specifically asked them about that.

Wayne, having bought my fair share of manuals (75+ volumes) over the years from the factory, that is a great price. I paid about $799 for a set back in 2000 and that was an inside deal from Brumos. Do these come with all the current updates? Thanks!

I purchased a set of 996 manuals from Pelican and got a "ton" of revisions with the set.

Be careful revising the manuals. After 35 years of revising aircraft operating manuals, training manuals and Jeppesen airways manuals, I have never seen a manual system as complicated and potentially confusing as the Porsche Maintenance manual set.

Hello there! I'm the sales & marketing manager for Bentley Publishers. Yes, after a long wait our 996 manual is about to come out in the next couple of weeks. I'm expecting to see our first sample copies from the printer within the next day or so but if you have any questions about what's in the book, post them here and I'll try to answer them.

"How much information is there on Targas? The manual would be worth the price even if it could only tell me how to adjust the back window so it doesn't squeak in the winter."

The manual has a 19 page section specifically covering the Targa top and sunroof, including removing and installing the top glass panel. However, we don't have a section covering the rear window.
