Ignition Switch – AC Problem

Recommended Posts

This morning something strange happened. My car is a 2001 Boxster S. I inserted the key to start as normal. There was an audible CLICK from the ignition switch. I turned the car off and the Key wouldn’t come out, it was locked in. I restarted the car, stopped and the key comes out. Restart and drive to work.

Then I notice the AC snowflake light isn’t coming on, nor do I have any air blowing from the vents. I manually raise and lower the fan speed but nothing.

Once at work, I checked the fuse for the AC Heating that seemed o.k. But something feels wrong with the ignition switch for certain. Can this be related? There aren’t any dashboard warning lights.

Thoughts?

So here’s where I’m at:

A great Indie shop Motorsports Northwest in Boise told me it is most likely the ignition switch. He gave me the part number and said when I ask Sunset Porsche about it to ask about the part upgrade since he knew it was there, but didn’t have the details at his fingertips.

A quick search through the Tech Bulletins (Worth the price of admission) on this site quickly yielded the appropriate document. Ordered from Sunset, instock prices less than else where and now enroute to Montana. More great service from them.

What I still lack is the following documentation:

Boxster Technical Manual,

Group 4

Repairs:

48-23 Removing and installing ignition switch

48-25 Removing and installing barrel lock

48-37 Replacing Steering lock

I’m curious if this is a DIY or if I should find someone locally to do it. I’m not sure how to remove the old switch. I’ve learned there is always a hard way and the correct (easier) way.

Thoughts?

I found the other thread about this switch and bought a replacement at NApa for $8.00. Will see tonight if it works, or if the switch had been replaced to the new one in the past. either way I'm covered.
