CEL and Several codes on 05 Cayenne v6

Recommended Posts

The vehicle is a 2005 Cayenne v6 w/ about 45,000 miles. I was driving a couple of days ago and left car running w/ ac blasting while I ran in somewhere as I had people in the car. I made about three 10 minute stops in a 2 hour period and left it running w/ ac on each time. On my way home I noticed a CEL. When I arrived home I hooked up the durametric and scanned for codes. It had a couple of codes by I just cleared them in hopes they would not return and if so I'd deal with them then as the car seemed to be running fine. About two days later the car was driven again and was fine all day w/ no recurring cel light. However, towards the end of my trip I left the car running again w/ the ac on again and when I got back in the car the cel light was present again. I checked the codes this morning and they were:

motronic 7.1 module - code p0441

Evaporative Emission System - Incorrect purge flow/ Short to ground or Positive present

A/C module - code 353

Feedback from blower regulator front - Short to ground or positive

Electrical System - code 2197

Potentiometer for footwell lights

I drove the vehicle today and I ran problem free all day but when I sat in the Chick-fil-a drive thru waiting on my food, it came back on. I then ran by local Euro shop that put new brakes and plugs in car recently and they said they could look at it on Tuesday but that the Evaporative code may have to do w/ my gas cap. I forget exactly what they said about the a/c code but they said they would diagnose when I bring it back in. I think they said I may need a fan replaced or something. Didn't act like either thing was a big deal but just wondered if anyone else has any ideas. Vehicle seems to run normally and AC seems to cool normally as well. Vehicle had plugs changed about 5,000 miles ago and new engine filter and is due for an oil change but nothing else major. Thanks in advance.

Chances are the EVAP purge solenoid has failed,it's easy to replace. As for the A/C faults, I would first check the condition of the battery. At idle speeds with the A/C on there is more demand on the electrical system with the alternator at it's lowest output potential and the battery might not have the reserve it once had which in turn can cause odd electrical problems or false fault codes.

Don't know how close an '05 is to an '04 but a gas cap code on mine is closer to an P0456 than the P0441. So wvicary is spot-on with the EVAP call. Mine just threw the P0456 last weekend so I had the cap checked. The garage said it probably just didn't get tightened after the last fill-up. They cleared the codes and they haven't come back (touch wood). Good luck with the A/C testing and please let us know the outcome!

Thanks for the info. guys. Here's a little update. I came home after setting up the appointment and cleared all fault codes. Car was driven over the weekend and CEL never returned. Yesterday i scanned the car w/ Durametric and saw all of the same codes were there although still no CEL. Today I took the car to the shop and they did my oil change and then brought the car around. They said that since the CEL was off it should be fine. I then told them that the Durametric was still showing the codes, although I had told them this already upon arriving. He looked at the list of codes I had written down and he said the gas cap was probably my problem but to wait and see and that my a/c freon was low so we set up an appointment to drain AC system and refill w/ freon to specs. He then said he'd make sure nothing else was wrong when I take it back in a few days for the AC service. I told him about the evap purge solenoid and about the battery being low and he said he'd check the battery on my return visit as well. I left a little upset I'd gone there for the diagnostic and then decided to do oil while there and they just kinda skipped over the diagnostic, although I have been pretty happy w/ this shop overall. Awesome prices and normally knowledgable advice but today was not a shining moment. I left and drove the car some more and while sitting in a drive-thru waiting for food the CEL appeared again. I had not sat anywhere in my weekend driving other than stoplights and so it seems my CEL only comes on if i'm parked w/ car running for over 3-5 minutes. I immediately called the shop and they said drop by however, when I did they were slammed and I said i'd bring it back one of the next two mornings to beat the crowd. I then went and filled the car up w/ gas and made sure to click the gas cap about 10 times after fueling to make sure it was closed properly. I then tried to start the car and when I released the key the car kept trying to turn over but wouldn't. I had to turn key off so it would stop trying. I then tried again and had to pump the gas. It finally started on third try and no problems on the way home. I will read codes later. The guy also tried to tell me that I couldn't clear the codes off of my car w/ durametric and that is why I was seeing same codes but I know I've cleared things before and not had them come back. I'll keep u posted

You gotta stay away from drive thrus. You can clear the codes with Durametric and can have codes but no check engine light until the drive cycles are complete and if the problem is still there then it will trigger a light.

Now when you tried to start the engine after refueling did the engine crank slowly or crank over fine just didn't flash up?

Not sure I completely understand the question but I turned the key and it started to crank but wouldn't actually turn over. It was like wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, but wouldn't turn over. I did it again and pumped the gas and it started and no other problems. Did the same thing once over a year ago after filling up but just thought it was some freak thing. Could a gas cap be causing this?? If i start car and drive it in normal conditions its fine but when I sit w/ car parked but running I get CEL.

So I checked the codes and I had all of the previous codes plus two new codes in the motronic module both referring to oxygen sensors. Shop diagnosed problems as two of the O2 sensors needed replacing, blower regulator needed replacing and purge valve. Replaced both o2 sensors on first visit and then on next trip in they replaced the blower regulator and purge valve as they had ordered incorrect ones first time. Left the shop and within an hour my CEL had returned. I called immediately but they were booked up for the day so I read codes when I got home. Now under motronic module, I have code p1009 - Oxygen Sensor Behind - Catalytic Converter exchanged. Under the A/C module I still have the 353 - Feedback from blower regulator. Finally under the Kessy module, I now have code 457 - Vehical electrical system control. Car will be going back next week.

Hi -- When was the last time you changed your main vehicle battery?

I never have changed it. I mentioned low battery the first time i took it in and they said there machine would tell them but never heard anything else about it. Why would some of the codes change and some not? Also when I just read the codes after clearing them this afternoon and driving some more, the Kessy 457 Vehicle electrical system control did not reappear. They removed the rear door panel to install a new ashtray in door and so maybe this had something to do w/ that fault?? Sucks if it was just a battery and they replaced all of this other stuff.
