steering rack problem?

I have a 996 GT3, there is about a good 5 to 10 degrees of dead spot free play in the steering. When I was cruising on the highway at 75 mph, I held the steering wheel with both hands and the car would pick a slight change of direction and go there depending on the road/wind conditions. It then prompted me to do a slight 5 to 10 degree shake of the steering wheel and there was no change of direction. I was wondering if it could be that the steering rack is shot and needs a rebuild. Anyone else ever have a problem like this?

What's been done before is the car just had a corner balance, I was actually just driving home from that. Also had all the steering components, bushings, control arms, trailing arms checked by two shops.

This sounds dangerous. Are there any other associated noises/clunks when you steer back and forth through the steering slack? I've not heard of GT3 racks wearing out...much less all at once. I would get it on an alignment rack where the front end can be raised off the slip plates and thoroughly inspected.

Please let us know what you find.
