Problem updating the PCM

Recommended Posts

Hello to everybody from Spain

I am owner of a 2005 987 S which has been always fantastic. I was using a 2006 DVD MAP.

The other day I tried to update the PCM, System and Navigation so to use 2007 or 2009 DVD Maps.

I started the process but the first disc did not complete the update process; it stopped when the screen was saying "update 1 of 3 equipment". I waited for a while and nothing happened so i took out the CD1 and inserted CD2 assuming the update will follow; but it didn't.

Now, the PCM does not recognise the devides. When I turned it on, i can read "System error: ampli, cd charger, navigation system, telephone not available"

I tried to puss 1-4-8 and nothing happens. Neither when I disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. When I press MAIN+TRIP, I can read the following info:

Ampli --- no software version

Cd changer --- no software version

Navigation system --- no software version

Telephone --- no software version

SW version 1.0

PCM

-- Target: 05024AD1 / 0205

-- Current: 04202JD1 / 3004

System Software

-- Target: 04514BD1 / 5104

-- Current: B0L03AD1 / 4303

I am going to visit the dealer but I want to know what can I do if I am not able to get an "easy" solution from them.

How can I restore the system to the previous working status?

devide 1 out of 3

and after 3-4 minutes,

Failed updated!

system CD defect. Update has ben cancelled

I went to the Porsche dealer this afternoon and they told me the PCM is broken. They say the PCM does not have communication with any device neither with the “Porche’s computer” they use for checking the systems on board the car.

They told me I need to replace the PCM, which is 1.400€ + tax + 2 of hours to install and configure.... so we are talking about $2700.

What else can I do?

Is it possible to buy one PCM from ebay or “alternative” dealers?

If this is the case, how do I know the exact characteristics of the PCM in order buy one which is exactly the same?

PCM 2.1 you can buy from e-bay. should work but you will still need dealer to configure it with PIWIS so first check with them if they will put it in. if not go to independent (amature) mechanic in your area
