BoxsterS....2000-2004

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a good used S.

I have found several in my area....several of the early cars have had new glass window tops installed so that becomes less of a decision point.

So what else would you consider?

I owned a 1999 986 for 5 years, so I have a good grasp on most of the major 986 issues.

Thanks :thankyou:

I have an 03 S and love it. It had an engine replacement in 07, so the engine had all the upgrades and updates. Just 20,000 miles on the new engine. That played a big role in my decision. Each year they add a little more, and address issues. I think as a general rule newer is better, unless you just find a great 02 or 03 for the money. Soon, I will be looking at an 07 or 08. Love these cars.

Maybe this Pelican Technical Article will assist you:

The Boxster 2001 cars are by far the most flexible in which engine you can install in them. The 2001 cars still have the 7.2 DME installed, but most of the other systems of the car were upgraded in anticipation of moving towards the 2002 CAN bus system that integrates various electronic systems on the car. With the exception of the anti-lock braking system, the proper CAN bus systems are integrated into the 2001 chassis and allow the easy installation of the later 7.8 DME. As a result, you can install any 1997-08 Boxster or 996 Carrera motor into these cars without too much difficulty. You can swap in any replacement engine of the same displacement from 2000-02 without having to remap the DME. (for example, a 2001 3.2L Boxster with a blown motor can accept a 2002 3.2L engine with no remapping needed).

Good luck B)

I'd look at condition, service history, impression of owner's attitude towards car and its maintenance, list of model year differences, price, tires, battery, top type, driving impressions...the list can get long. And I'd ask about originality of IMS, RMS, AOS, water pump, clutch, rotors, suspension...with pluses for any replacements. Lastly, a PPI by a mechanic known to be a fanatic.
