Hi all

Yet again in the world of Porsche ownership I have another new problem.

It's a numbered list so please fell free to answer any or all if you think you can help.

Like always I really appreciate everybody's help and many thanks in advance guys.

1.Today while driving my CHECK ENGINE light came on.

2.Smoking out of left exhaust and from general engine area? (white with burning smell)

3.Liquid dripping from under engine it's dark in colour don't thinks it's oil? see pic's

4.Coolant's ok level as is oil, no mayo substance in either coolant tank or oil filler cap

5.Loud screech sound on start up (see video attached maybe related to CEL?)

Durametric results are:

Search for AOS (air oil separator).

Check for coolant level (AOS will screech loudly if coolant is low).

Check the condition of your coolant.

Symptoms sound like an AOS or damaged hose/cracked coolant tank.

Wil do, but the AOS is only 2 years old and it's the new updated version?

Vicinity of the AOS leak or crack / Coolant tank leak or crack / coolant hose crack/leak?

Does it smell like coolant or feel more like oil... might be hard to tell if it is just sludge?

It's also a plastic part that is easy to miss a hose clamp or easy to damage a hose unless you have adequate clearance (engine removed).

Just throwing out ideas here based on what you've described so far.

A lot of burning white smoke in the engine bay sounds like a big coolant leak to me.

it kind of feels like oil?

No real smell at all but when it drips on the driveway it stain's like oil.

I'm sorry I know it sounds like Im contradicting myself :)

The first pic is near the 1-3 tensioner (2 stamped rings), which is in the vicinity of the AOS leak or crack / Coolant tank leak or crack / coolant hose crack/leak.

Come to think of it though, you're right the 2 rings is the main IMS tensioner on the right side. So that's not near the AOS or coolant tank area.

Might just be a coolant leak from a hose...

Ok logray I'll check it out I did not open it I only did a visual (looking at the tank.

2 years ago I changed a whole lot of parts on this car the idea of them already failing is a bit annoying....

i.e. new coolant tank + cap, new coolant hose's, new AOS, the list go's on and on.

I'll check back on line in a few hours and post my results.

Thanks a mil for the fast replay.

With all the smoke and liquid I am betting the level of coolant in your expansion tank is low because of a hose leak.

Why is that odd?

p.s. I just checked the coolant + tank and all is ok it's actually pretty full?

here are 2 pictures, I've had a good look around and from what i can see from the bay area there seems to be a leak coming form the hose (R.H.S) I have in my hand a dripping down thru the engine?

P1411 is odd on the Secondary Air system since you have a UK car.

Ok will do, any idea how to post a video,

I have a small clip I made this morning of the sound and it's pretty clear in it!

WIll try later I have to collect the miss now, in a E-class ;(

Thanks logray

Come to think of it. Check your power steering fluid level. Screech could also be from a failing PS pump or belt. Might be PS fluid leak.

We can't rule out the oil cooler as well which is above that area too, more towards the front of the car though... perhaps fluid from that or P/S reservoir/pump getting onto belt causing screech, or from the P/S pulley itself.

I'll watch the video later, but did you check the power steering fluid level?

Do you notice anything strange with the steering or clutch action?

Assuming the engine runs fine? aside from the screech and smoke from whatever oil is leaking and burning off. Is it smoking on a cold startup, or only when the car was hot?

How is the oil level in the car?

1. Check this thread if you have not http://www.renntech....el-p0410-p1411/

2. If it smells sweet, it's coolant

3. Try to use a flash light to shine some light on it at an angle and look at an angle. It will flourese if it's coolant.

5. Sounds like started gear not retracting completely or retracting slowly.

Did all these happen the same time?? You seem to have 1 a year ago when you posted then. Good luck.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well guys here's an update on the progress:

1. the leak from the rear left side was indeed the Power Steering hose,

(which was dripping onto the exhaust causing smoke as it evaporated but only when in reverse gear for some strange reason!)

2. the loud screech sound on start up was of course, the Starter Motor which is been replaced,

(I'm buying a brand called LUCAS over the BOSCH because of cost, it's from Porsche specialist! you know what they say buy cheap buy twice but I'm sure it be ok in this case)

3. as for the CEL/ check engine light, we still can't find the cause of the code's:

P0430 code 45-Cat conversion bank 2

P1411 code 208- Secondary air injection system

Any suggestions for these codes would be gratefully appreciate, as we currently have the engine out now's the time to look and fix.

Also given the car a general service, filter's & oil. I was going to use 5W 30 oil as some say it's better suited to the 996 than the 5W 40

don't want to cause a tread post war about oil I'm just curious if anyone has tried it?

More importantly are the cause of these codes so if anyone thinks they know please post.

Cheers

will keep you's updated.

James
