How to tell C2 from C4

Recommended Posts

I left the Porsche family a few years ago and getting the bug to get back in. Looking at 996 despite my original bad experience with intermix.

I'm looking at some 996s now...how can I tell if it's a C4 vs. C2 that just had a C4 badge put on the back? Shouldn't the VIN tell me?

Look for a front diff and half shafts. Also the door sills should say Carrera 4.

I once heard of someone trading in a Jeep "Rubicon", which he swapped the axles and t-case from his old 97 Wrangler. The dealer didn't notice untill it was on the lot for sale! Tells you about the quality of a Jeep dealer mechanic - assumed it was a Rubicon just because it had the stickers, and the VIN said it was, didn't have the common sense to notice that the important stuff had been swapped.
