4-way flasher switch faulty?

Recommended Posts

After removing and reinstalling my gauge pod the 4-way flasher switch turns the flashers on, but won't turn them off.

Please check your 986 for me......When the hazard flasher button is depressed, does it "click"?

Does it stay somewhat depressed or something until you press it again to turn the flasher off?

Mine just pushes in, the lights go on, and it returns to the exact same position. No click. Then the lights will go off while you are depressing/holding the switch, but they won't switch off when the switch is released.

The switch on my car does have a soft click when I push the button in to turn off the emergency flashers.

Perhaps another reinstallation glitch? The switch can be reinstalled upside down but of course the button would have to be forced back on the switch.....which might slightly impede the action of the button.

Just to make sure I know what is happening, with the emergency flashers off, the button should be flush with the bezel. To turn on the flashers, you push in slightly which "unlocks" the button allowing it to pop out a fraction of an inch turning on the flashers. To extinguish the emergency flashers, you push in on the button until the button softly "locks" and comes to rest in a position flush with the bezel.

Is this the way your emergency flasher button is operating?

No Bill, that's not how it's operating...... The switch (which is now uninstalled) has no detent, or in and out position as you describe. When you push it in the white movable portion it merely travels in and out to the same position with no clicks whatsoever. It's amazing that this type of switch that is probably operated 100,000 times in quality control testing can fail after being used maybe 5 times in its life. But that's the way it goes. It's a $67 part new but there is one on the internet right now used for $25. But there is no rush to replace it since the car is garaged for the winter.

Thanks for checking it out.
