I have a 2011 911S with a shifter that vibrates, trailing throttle in 6th between 2200 RPM and up, irratically, and only when well warmed up. The dealer readjusted the shift cables which cured it for about 800 miles. The car has 7000 miles since new. It will go away when I shift from 6th back to 5th and back to 6th. It also will buzz in 3rd under throttle. it can be felt but less noticably through the rest of the car as well. It seems that the stick shift takes the brunt of it. Thanks!

Are you sure with the 'well warmed up' comment..

Try and video it and post up on youtube, then people will see what you are describing

So 100% nothing to do with the balance of your wheels sending a harmonic??

The wheels are in perfect balance. Runs smooth as glass. The shifter simply buzzes. I can hold my finger ring against it and create different tones. Will go away when I shift and come back after a few more shifts. Generally occurs after a couple miles of driving.

I have to believe that the actual source of the vibration is not the shifter itself as the shifter is bolted to the floor and not solidly attached to anything else. I'm afraid you are in for an "Easter Egg Hunt" to find this one..............

Thanks for your reply JFP. I have been looking at the other threads concerning unusual vibrations in other models and there seems to be no shortage. If this is normal then thats fine too, I can live with the annoyance for now but in as much as it is a new car it will become Porsche's problem sooner than later.

I thought an easier solution could be found in this forum. In as much as the car needs to be driven some miles before it starts buzzing, something needs to get heat soaked first. I don't DT the car or drive it roughly so it is hard to imagine that there is an engine problem. My trips are generally 200 miles or more and it's out on the interstate where the vibration begins. As I said in my original thread the buzz can be felt in other parts of the car but it manifests itself in the shifter.

In as much as it is on trailing throttle it is mostly a downhill event but is prevelent when

on and off of the throttle. Depress the clutch and it is gone. Not tire balance.

I have read about the plastic base the shifter rides in, exhaust bracket failures, and other maladies but none associated with this model. I'm honestly thinking that it is something simple like bleeding the clutch or different oil in the tranny. You can feel the gears mesh when you shift, something I did not feel in a new car I drove at another Porsche dealer.

First, I would not switch gear oils; this subject has been covered many times and the OEM fill is still the best route. Besides, if the gear box had a problem like a bad bearing or the like, new oil is not going to fix it. It sounds like you have an engine/drive line vibration that is showing up in the shifter. Problem is that you need to try to spot the source either by having someone else drive the car while you crawl around and try to find it, or run the car on a dyno and look for it.

Sometimes these annoying problems are difficult to find and can chew up a lot of shop time in the process simply because there are so many possible candidates..............

Thanks JFP. I appreciate the feedback, it's minor right now and tightening the shift cables helped alot. I'll keep us all tuned in .

      I am missing the shift knob insert to my Boxster S 6 speed and cannot find a replacement anywhere without having to buy a whole new shifter... Does anyone
      have one they would like to donate or sale? Or does anyone have any ideas on how to get one. Its just the insert that fits on top of the shifter Reverse through 6th...
      Or does anyone have any ideas on how to make one? I am at a loss and it looks raty without the insert.....

      I've got a 1999 996 Carrera that hasn't had any mechanical issues outside of a water pump replacement earlier this year. Just today I noticed that when in 3rd to 5th gear (I haven't had it on freeways to see if it's in 6th too, but most likely it does) in the mid rpm ranges (2500 - 3000+) there is a vibration that I can feel through the gas pedal and throughout the car. When the gas is let up and/or when the vehicle is coasting the vibration goes away. The vibration seems to only occur on acceleration and does seem to be coming from the rear. The check engine light came on as well, at first it was flashing and is now constant.
       
      Any tips on what this could be? Drive shaft? Engine mount? Catalytic converter?  .....?

      Hello everyone. It's been a while.

      Found threads on replacing the shifter cable. Thanks to all for that. The cable is new, but now I see that the point where the female end of the cable attaches to, the male end that is on the lever that is on the transmission, is shot to pieces as well. Anyone know how to replace this male end, and the part and number needed?

      BTW, this is a 2002 996 C4S Coupe.

      this is my first post! let's see if anyone can help me out with this problem.
       
      i have a 2004 porsche cayenne turbo with 120 000 miles. took it for a high speed run last night (130+ mph).
      when i got home i noticed a very rough idle and the car was shaking/vibrating. i can also hear a noise from the engine similar to an
      exhaust leak.
       
      the check engine light was already on prior to that ride (codes are : p2187, p2189, p0011, p0441)
      no new codes so i assume there is no missfires?
      feels like it runs on 7 cylinders.. coils and spark plugs have been replaced recently
       
      can a high speed run causes a blown spark plug/coil ?
       
      i still have boost so i assume it is not a boost/vaccum leak?
       
      can it be a stuck valve, bad spring valve all of a sudden?
       
      do i need a compression test or how can i check if one cylinder is missfiring?
       
      (i speak french sorry for grammar)

      Experts, I just drove my MY 01 996 C2 27k miles odometer, from the airport, and it has a violent vibration at low speeds under 20mph and under 3k rpm. I don't have a CEL reader to post the codes
      When I was not on the gas the vibration went away, put as soon as gas pressed it came back. Pulling off and under 20 mph it felt like the something drastic was about to happen and the CEL was flashing. Btwn 3-4k rpm it was less violent vibration but still bad. I recently got it back from the shop and but it was only for oil change, and brake flush no engine work. The MAF sensor was already replaced last yr, maybe 4k miles on that.
      I searched the other threads and it could point to ignition coil pack.
      I drove it about 14 miles and tried to baby it as best I could. The dealer is about 20 miles away mostly highway, what are your thoughts on driving it to the dealer, or should I tow it. One post said u could damage the cats and there really expensive.
      Can someone give me guidance if it is ignition coil how big and costly a job that is? I know u don't have much to go on w/out the codes.

      Question - should I err on the side of caution?
